IN CRIMINAL-JURISDICTION.-
BEFORE HIS HONOUR SIR WILLIAM M. GOODMAN (CHIED JUSTICE).
ARBON.
Evidence was resumed in the case in which Chui Chong was charged with having committed arson by setting fire to a house at 318. Qaven's Road West on 27th December,
At the conclusion of the evidenca counsel addressed the jury, and his Lordship summed up, pointing out that when the fire broke out the prisoner did not give the alarm of fire as he might have been expested to do and that the spirit-shop balow the premises occupied by the prisoner was very much over-insured. Was there any mativo assignable why the prisoner and his partner should est fire to the premises? There was none unless that they wore in losgue with the people down below, and the Attorney-General's theory was that the boxmaking business carried on by the prisoner in the room above was only a profaxt. for placing indsamable material there for the purpose of setting fire to the house,
The jury retired to consider their verdict at four o'clock. Alter un absence of 15 minutes they returned iate Court, and the foreman statel that by a winjority of 4 to 3 they found the prisoner guilty.
His Lordship printed out that whilea majority of 1 to 3 was saficient under the old law, the now law required a majority of 5 to 2 to convict a person of any offence. The jury must again retire and reconsider the verdiót.
After a further absence of 14 winntes, the
majority of 5 to 2 jury returned with a verdict of guilty by
His Lordship deferred judgment until today, when the other charge of arson in connection with the same fire will be tried.
The Court adjourned until ten o'clock this morning.
