The birth and death rates of Italy for forty years have been reviewed by Prof. Giuseppe Sormui. The births wacked their highest point of 33.34 for 1,000 in 1876, and their

minimum was 33.49 in 1899, while the corres ponding limits of the death rate were 34.39 in 1867 and 21.87 in 1899. Both birth and death

rates have been diminishing, although there has been a constant excess of births over deaths varying from 2.49 in 1857 to 12.80 in 1897. Assuming the lossened death rate to be a result of better control of infections diseases, it is estimated that 200,000 persons have been erved

from death and at least twenty times as many have been saved from illness.

Accustomed to words of gorous brevity and thundering soul from its local professors, the bowe amateurs have beer educated to receive their knowledge rambed down thoir throats, The local educa for always makes the best move, and if any brave spirit wants to know, why, an equally loud, "What do you do?" silences him.
