waking up their minds to say something, he proposed to make a few observations on what ̈ be thought was the most interesting lecture delivered in Hongkong for a number of years. The question of the influence of the anopheles squito in spreading malaria was a usost im portant one, and there was nothing in the fife history of the mesquite, saopheles and cales, that had not been clearly expounded by Dr. Thomson; in fact so clearly had that bistory been detailed that there was not a mosquito in the Colony but would lie uneasily in his bod that night. (Laughter.) The question, however, was not solely the connection existing between the mosquito and malaris, but whether the mosquito was the enle means of propagating the
the disease. That that charge could be laid against the mosquito did not seem probable from the experience of the troops occupying the Senatorium at the Peak two years ago. Mala rial fever attacked them, and so badly that they hand to be removed to the berrieke on the lower Dr. Young, an officer of the Indian Jarels. Medical Staff, who was here at the time of the North China Expedition; and who, like Dr. | Thomson, was an enthusiest in the investigation of this most interesting question, made my emmination of the surroundings of the Sapul torium, and found them to be swarming with mosquitoes. He found that the anopheles mos quito was present everywhere, and it was proposed that something should be done to get rid of the insect, The steps recommended" were taken, and 900 to 250 Indian troops were sout-up by Major-General Gascoigue. These men were engaged for months in cutting down brushwood, draining nullahs, and doing everything that science could devise for the purpose of ridding the locality of mosquitoes. The curious thing was that those Indian troops, who were exposed to all the ravages of the mosquitoes at nisht, for they were encamped there, did not suffer at all. When the operations were finished the white troops were again sent up to the Sama- toriam and no disease was to be found there, but when part of the King's Own Regiment took up occupation of the Sanatorium auch-a great amount of malarial fever declared itself that the men had to be withdraws. Dealing 11 with the Now Territory, whore they had had large experience of malarial fever, and where a number of man had been lost during the building of the new Police Stations, His Excellency said that at Bui Kau ths erection of the station was delayed for a

According to the theory proponuded by Dr. Thomson, the mosqal toa must have becoms infected from the coolies, and in turn should have infected the healthy men who afterwards inhabited tho station. But they did not, and there the mutter remained. After dealing with the menus adopted for the fighting of malaria in the Now Territory, consisting chiefly in the proper use of prophylactics, which were attended with beneficial results, His Excellency concluded by saying that in all such theories he was sare one could always and some fact that conkl not be got over, and be was by au mesas sure there were not other agencies besides the Anopheles mesquito for the propagation of malarial fever. DICTIONARY,
WITH THE PUNTI AND MANDARIN PRONUNCIATION.
For comprehensiveness and practical service his Work stands unrivalled. All the new words which the Chineso have of late years been com pelled to coin to express the numerous objecta ir machinery, photography, telegraphy, and in science generally, which the rapid advance of forúgu relations bus imposed upon them, are her givea in extenso. Each and every word is fully illustrated and explained, forming exercises for students of a most instructive nature. Both the Court and Punti pronunciations are given, the accents being carefully marked on the boat principle hitherto attained. The typography displays the success of an attempt to make tho Chinese and English type correspond in the size of body, thereby effecting a vast economy of space, achieving a clearness not previously attained, and dispersing with those vast margins and vacant spaces which have heretofore charao- tarized Chinese publications.
To illustrate the vast acope of the work the following factsarosubmitted for consideration - Chalmers Vocabulary contains about 16,000 Chinese characters, and Medhurst's English and thiness Dictionary about 100.000 whilst this work contains more than 50,000 English words, and upwards of 600,000, Chinese characters Again, despite all the grammars and other elementary works as yet published, the student of tais difficult language absolutely requires ex amples to display the verious applications and equivalents of different words which have one general meaning. Of these examples this work contains more than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published
