A serious question has arisen in connection with the underground tuba railways with which Trondon, within a few years, is to be pierced ín all directions. It has been argued from the start of the "tupenny Libe" that the ventilation was automatio and well nigh perfect by reason of each train nearly filling the tube and acting like a piston, forcing ont the bad air and draw- | ing in fresh. The public accepted this theory,
and as there were no bail odours, it was assumed, that the atmosphere was kisitby. The patron- ags has become so great recently that the cars at certain hours have been badly crowded and many passengers began to complain of feelings of dizzinem sud oppression. It was found that this was due to the presence to a great excess of odourlers carbonio acid gas generated by human beings.
