THE VINTAGE IN EUROPE. We have received fra Messrs. Catles. Palmer & Co. the following report on the above :--

It is not a satisfactory tecord we have this your to place before you touching the result of the Europesa grape harest. The French growors have experienced as much disappoint- woat by the vagaries of the weather as do our home agriculturists, and the expression, Sunny France," mast in future, according to the records of 1901 viutagus, be received cum grano glis. The most distrous results are those we refer to as having occurred in Cham- pague and other districts in France, but notably in Spain, where the result is deplorable.

FRANCE.

Bordeaux.-It unfortunately happens by far too frequally that the expressed anticipations of viticulturists as to promising successful results of a vintage had better ive been unsaid or unwritten to use a homely proverb "it is better not to reckon your chickens before they are hatched.", expectations of good results following the galluring of grapos this year have provedl altogether wrong.. No doubt the fine weather of tas ammer gave occasion or hope of au abundant harvest, but continuous scarred about the gathering this, the Tent wing at the quality of the wine made left much to be desired; the body and colour of the wine are not what they otherwise would

the ripes are less exposed to the effects of an excessive rainfall, and these will in consequence produce better quality wine. We have official record yet of the quantity of wine that bas bean made in Francs in this present year. In 1900, the produce was exceptionally abu dant, the quantity of wine then made being no less than 2,550,375 hogsheads; there has been nothing approaching this y.vid since 1894, that there is a very large available stock for future consumption, and of good quality.

Burgundy. It is too early for us yet to give an exact account of the recent gathering he wino made is likely to prove a reflection of that made in the year 1906. In Burgandy dis tricts, excessive rain caused the grapes to swell ju a most extraordinary fashion, resulting wine of a light description; it is very clean,
