The best description of this game is the state. ment that it was, a game of surprises. The Noble first surprise was that Smith won the loss; the next surprise was that the Club could not knock up more than an insignifient 57; the third and greatest surprise was that the Navy, who seemed to hare an unusually soft job, failed to equal the Club score. Seventy wickets fall in two hours for 111 rana! Cricket, like a woman, we nover attempted to make a prediction about, sud we have long learned to receive her smiles or hor frowns with equanimity. The folding was that of the Nary and therefore good, but the bowling WAN not formidable, Silver's change of pace being the only trundling tactics that held any danger for the batamen. Still, 5 wickets for 17 ruza, being Broadhurst's analysis, calls for an explanation which we can't give. If the collaps of the Clab demands on 05 planation beyond our powers to afford, it would be a luge task to offer an explanation of the downfall of the Navy, which, fortunately for the rest of us, was caused by a British attack. Gible was well taken by Beresford Ash bebind the wickets; then Muskennie brilliant- ly snapped up Moore at Alp: Pringle was splendidly taken at mid-off by Barnie off a hot drive:Ward judged Wood to a footy at long on, and Dixon at point (where he fielded admirably) cleverly caught Sheward left-handed. The thro team men, Hinds, Hooper, and Gerrard, all bowled well, and the "griffin," Gray, showed good form in his first match. For the Navy, Willcox and Selfleet stood cat conspicuously, being the only two, to register over 700. Altogether it was a most enjoyable match, and it is to be hoped that the return match will come off at no distant date, when we wish the Navy better luck. Appended are the scores:---
