TER SALARIES OF BUBORDINATE OFFICERS, Hon. T. H. I bare not a copy of the Hansard with and love not been able to find the newspaper containing the noonnt of the Council proceedings, but I have a recollection that such a promise was given that the inoresse in the malarled of subordinate etilcers would be dealt with forthwith. Now loarn that the increase is not to become due fill next year
The CHAIRMAN That is so. If the hon. momber had refreshed his memory by reading the correspondence on the subject, he would Jave seen that HE, the Governor, in accordance with the recommendations to (the committee appointed to enquire into question of the zalaries of enbordinate office recommended to the Secretary of State that the increase should date from the beginning of this year.

SPORTING AND OTHER NOTES. I hear some talk of a regatta, but have not heard yat if the V.B.C. and Rowing Club are holding it together or whether it is to be run by the V.R.C. alone. Last year's regatta was a Basco, and it is a pity the two Clubs do not ran it togother this year and thus get more interest taken in the event and more enthusiasm shown, as in old days. The VRC. cannot run tho regatta alone, as most of the older rowing members (the backbone of rowing) have loft them and joined the new Club. The fact of the matter is that there is not room for two rowing Clubs in the Colony, and before the V.B.C. start their new building it is to be hoped that all those interested in rowing will join forces and that the Club over the way will cease to exist, as from what I learn it is not a very popular institution or at any rate is not mado much use of by the older members who
formed it.

dus partly to the growth of our various reserve
funds and partly to the increase in premium rescipte. We Reserve Fand, which will raise this fand to the to place $75,000 to We propose round sum of one million and a half of dellere and to carry forward the balance, vis, 3903,000, against outstanding losses and claims. This fluishes with the year 1900. As regards the figures for the year 1801, they differ vory little from the figures shown for the year 1900 in last year's report and are so far satisfactory. I would like to point out to shareholders that, as regards the first six months of 1901, there is no vary large increase either in premium receipts or in interest as compared with 1900, and that, therefore, they must not expect another step upwards of three dollars in the dividend next year. Considering the state of trade all over the world and specially in the East, I think it is a matter for congratulation that the premium receipta show no diminution. Turning now to the balance shoot, there is a reduction compared with last year of some 83,000 in the Exchango Fluctuation Account, and a reduction of some $50,000 in the Investment Fluctuation Account. The former is due to the fact that our Sterling balances have been carried out at the exchange of 2s. to the dollar, and is, therefore, a purely nominal reduction, The decrease in the In- restment Flucination account is due to the fall in the market value of our best Sterling securities, and it is very fortunate that we have this fund to fall back upon for this purpose. The Reinsurance Fund and Underwriting Suspense Account both show satisfactory in- cranes, and I think all will admit that the position of the Society la altuge her a very sound one.
