August that Yorkshire had acceded to the invita tion given by Surrey to play a supplexuntary match at the Oval on the 16th September for Lockwood's benefit, which turned out a fiasco on the 25th July and following days owing to rain. The match, which was a two-days fixture, was played accordingly, and ended in a draw. Hayes, for Surrey, knocked up a total of 98 runs. Surrey, in their second innings, however, made only 17 runs for four wickets. Bain fell during the whole of the second day, The total attendance was 16,000. The match is not rockoned in the championship.
