Portsmouth, 23rd August.- The inhabitants of this anciant borough ha been on the throes of anticipation consequent on the return of the battleship Centurion, Captain John B. Jelliooo, C. B., bearing the flag of Admiral Sir Edward H. Seymour, G.C.H, from her long and eventful commission

on the Chian Station.

On the 14th inst, the Mayor, Alderman A. Laon Emanuel, J. F., who has been a visitor to Hongkong and Shanghai, called a public meeting, relative to the reception thought beat to be given the home-comers, and it was revolved to entertain them at a banquet and reception, consequently there were many sab-

When one is hunting about a ship in search of foreign exrios, the sudden appearance of some pineteen Chinamen was, to say the least, somewhat startling.
