Mr. Gillies is entitled to a great deal of recognition for all his excellent services, energy and perseverance to promote the wel fare and interest of the concer and the shareholders are not likely to ignore the fact. There are recognitions at Umes to suck men, when the monetary gift in so bouefit, by the interest to accrue from auch gifts for the inture sapport of the individual or bis family. Mr. Gillies is not depending on such a gift or sucir un income?

I suggest that a handsome and valuable piece of plate with a special tablet engraved recognising all the goodness of the popular manager, which abould not exceed say between 55,000 to $1,000 dollars, he given. COOPER'S HILL ENGINEERS.

The correspondents which has taken place between Lord George Hamilton and the Gov ernment of India has been published concert the monerials for compensation of certain Civil Engineers appointed from Cooper's Hill prior to 1870. THE DUTY ON OPIUM.

In reference to the announcement made re- cently by Heater in respect of the Chinese tariff, a letter was, on the 7th August, receivoc by the Secretary from Messrs. D. Sassoon, Bons & Co. and E. D. Sassoon & Co., asking the Chamber to wire to the British Minister at Peking and ascertain whether there will be any change in the present tariff of duty and Lekin on foreign opium.

The following telegram was accordingly addressed to Bir Ernest Satow-the-same even- ing.

"Hongkong opium merchants wish to ascertain will there be any increase of duty or lekin on opium. Please advise. Thomas Jackson, Chairman, Chamber."

To this the subjoined reply was received the following evening:-

Chamber, Hongkong. "Your telegram of August 7th. No: none is contemplated. Batos.". The Secretary stated that the result of the inquiry was communicated to all the members of the Chamber concerned in the opium trade

Decided, when acknowledging receipt of the telegram, to convey the thanks of the Chamber to Sir Ernest Satow for his ready response to the inquiry.

THE DIFFICULTY OF PROCURING BALLAST,

Rond letter from the Government, dated 30th July, in reply to the Chamber's letter of the 12ths idler on the above subject, stating that H. E. the Governor regretted to lear of the delay in the iwne of permits and had given instructions which it was hoped would obriste such delay in the future. The question of quarrying in order to obtain stone for ballast was then engaging the attention of the Government.

EGISTRATION OF CHINESE PARTNERSHIPS, Read letter from Singapore Chamber of Commerce stating that as this question now before the Penang Chamber-is likely 2002 to come up at Singapore, they would be glad of all the information this Chamber can afford them on the matter.

London, 1st August. PORTUGUESE TERRITORY AGAIN INVADED.

A Boer comando, with two guns, has entered Portuguese territory and is encamping at Gupetz, where 500 Portuguese troops Lava already arrived and reinforcements are starting from Lourenzo Marques. It is stated that the object of the invasion is to search for sapplies.

BORES ABANDON CIVILISED WARFARE, Lord Kitchener reports that the Boers who surrounded patrols of Yeomanry and native Scouts at Doorn River, in the Orange River Colony, on the 28th nitimo, shot some of the scouts, und also a yeoman named Finch, in cold- blood, after surrender. They said they thought cold-blooded Finch was a native. Many enses murder of natives have recently occurred in Cape Colony.

FINANCING THE WAR.

Simis, 31st July,

Major Rowe, West Kent Regiment, com- manding the Adrlarija force, reports that the enery retired during the night abandoning the tower and adjacent position. The tower was at once blown up. The country is reported clear of enemy but the force will remain near Addarija for some days. The object of the expedition has been successfully attained in spite of serious difficulties, and the Lient General Commanding the Forces, Bombay reports that Major Rowe and the officers deserve credit, and the conduct of the troops throughout has been very satisfactory. general health of the foren is excellent."

BUDDEN DEATH OF AN M.P.

London, 3rd August. The death is announced of the Right Hon.

William Bramston Beach, Conservative Mem ber for Andover and Father of the House of Coumens. He was thrown from his cab last night.

The Right Hon. William Witleor Branston" Besch was born in 1826, and was educated at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated B.A., 1849, and M.A.. sabsequently. He was appointed Captain in the Hants Yeomanry Cavalry, 1855. He sat for feats since April. 1857, und was in favour of the reduction of local taxation,]

DARMAIDS 18 CALCUTTA-ALL FUTURE LICENSES AFFECTED,

As a result of the memorials of the Women's Christian Temperance Association, which has been infiuentially signed, the Government of Bengal hold that the employment of barmaids in Calcutta is not only injurions to the women thomedlves, but a discredit to the European community. Orders have been given making it a condition in all future licenses of bars and other drinking places that no women shall be employed in connection with them in any capacity.

The Blue Book just out contains a drepatch from Lord Cromer, dated the 19th June, cover ing a report of Sir William Garstin, regarding Sir irrigation projects on the Upper Nile, William Garstin, after discussing fully alter native plans, favears the scheme for a great reservoir for utilising the waters of Lake Tsars, and so supply the needs of both Egypt and the Sondan. The matter, however, requires Sir care and the fallost preliminary study William Garstin concludes by stating that a railway from Khartoum to the Red Sen is far

more urgent than any grandiose scheme of irrigation.

Lord Cromer fully endorses this, and says that preliminary investigations, with the view of selecting a route, will be made during the onaning winter.

THE VICTORIA MEMORIALS 18 INDIA.

Allahabad, 1st August.

A meeting of the North-Western Provinces Queen Victoria Memorial Fund was held at Government Honze, Allahabad, the other day. the gross collection to the all Indis Memorial It was resolved to contribute ten per cent, on Fund, Calentta. It was alu resolved that the ballance of the N. W. P. Fand, after deducting the amountz sut apart for Cawanpora, Bulland- shahar, Moradabad and Faruckbabad, which from the amount of their subscriptions are entitled to local memorials, be expended in the ersation of memorials in the following cities in relative order of importance: Allahabad, Agra, Benares, Hardwer and Muttra. Two prizes of Rs. 3,00 and Rs.1,500 will be offered for designs with estimates and plans for these memorials.
