NORTHERN NOTES.
The following items are from the F. and T. Times of the 22nd June.
The railway between Chingting-fa and Paoting has resumed running.
It is reported that the provisanal government, Intend making a market square round the
In remarking on the recent sanitary improve mont, which, bave been made in the aity of Macao, in the notes published in the Daily Press of the 19th ult., reference was mule particularly to the district of Vo-long and the vininity of San Lozarro. Whether through neglect, or through ini. ciency of public funde, or through both, the fact remains that since the memorable fire nothing has been done to remove a standing dong to public health and a rebuke to civilisation-as the preumbis of the expropriation proclamation rather forcibly puts it constituted by these rains and 1koir insalubrious environment. Thanks to the regenerating infiuence of a progressive administrator and, to the well- directed orgies of the public works officials, the resumption of this district, popularly denominated the old bazaar of San Domingo, has at last been decided upon. Steps are being taken to carry it into effort. The proclamation of the Governor in Council, under the authority of which the expantion is to be enfored, ia published in the Boletín Oficial of the 9th June.
A NEW OBSERVATORY.
Another item of news connected with public works is the approval of an expenditure of fifteen hundred dollars for the fitting up of the Loure adjoining the church in Penha for the purposes of a meteorological observatory. To what extent Government here act upon the anggestions of the Leal Souado in pablle matters will be more readily appreciated when it is ex- plained that the promising improvement in tho meteorological zouvise is the outcome of one of a series of recommendations abodied in the report drawn up by the Senate and presented to the Colonia! National Congress in Lisbon. The report is dated the 15th February, 1901. The recommendations of the Senate in regard to this
observatory are to the following effect:--
In Macaosawbere typhoons are frequent, a meteorogiest station is of much utility for the furnishing of weather forecasts to the seafar ing community. One already exists here under the direction of the Harbour, Master. Notwithstanding that, as a rule, the harbour masters of Macso have devoted much attention to this branch of their work, it must be conceded that these officers have neither the necessary permanence in their offes nor yet time enough to devote seriously to meteorological studies. It is much to be desired that a meteorological observatory may be established in the hermit age of Peaku, like those in Manila and Shanghai, equipped with like appliances and provided with an equally capable personnel. The observatories referred to are under the direction of members of the religious ordor of Society of Jesus, and have rendered great and important services in the cause of commerco and navigation. In Macao it will be easy to organise a similar observatory, relying upon members of the same religious order-the professors of the Seminaris Diocesanc-for its direction. In a short time,
