In bis previous dospatch, dated 19th August, hy made no reference to the part played in the attuck on Peking by those portions of the British forces, which were not with him at the mement of the wlief of the Legations, she has not they received any reports on their operations. "I trust it will not be doomed out of place in this despatch if I rosturo to draw attention to the invaluable services rendered to this fored by the loyal, and zealous co-operation of the Military authorities at Hongking. L. A. Whooler. Chief Ordnance Officer, and Major M. M. Merrin, Royal Garrison Artillery,

On 17th August I eunt a detachment to oopy the ruins of the railway terminus at Machispn, with a view to asserting our interent in the railway to Tientsin. Owing, howevor, to a Russian report that the onemy wore advancing in force from the Hunting Park this detachment was withdraws ou 18th Angost, and a day or two afterwards in post was occupied by the Russians without reference to us. Soma observations follow on the services of the Medical and Commissariat Departments during the campaign. The Medical Depart ment was not sovorely tested, the number of casualties on the march to Peking being com-
