DEATH OF LORD WILLIAM BERESFORD,

A SCION OF A SPORTING PAMILÍJ

It is certainly very remarkable that Lord WIHam Beresford should have taken the long journey to the happy hunting grounds within a few weeks of his racing partner in Indis, the Maharajah of Patiala. No men ever exercised such an influence upon sport in our great Eastern Empire as this famous soldier and this dashing prince. It has been said by some uncharitable curandgeons that thers never was a good Be resford but the career of Henry, the third

36th Foot brave deed which gave our late when the Nottingham Forest football team Queen the opportunity of decorating his breast sustained their first defeat at home during this season, and what is more to the point were con- with the Victoria Cross

an American lady, Lily, Duchess of Marlborough, and took up his residence at Deepdeno, near Dorking. Soon after his marriage in 1895 he entered into a racing partnership on the English turf with that wealthy tobacco-planter Mr. Pierre Lorillard, of Iroquois fame-the only American sportsman who has won the Derby Their horses were chiefly American, and in 1896 the Curraghmore hins jacket and the traditional black cap were often seen on our sources, horses as Diakka, Berzak, Randis and numerous juveniles by Bonsation and the expatriated

League as the powerful Farosters, of Sherwood. Nor is it possible, if one were so inclined, to depreciate the splendid victory of the Novocas trinns who won ja gallant style. The last Christmas of the century will not be readily forgotten by Notts Forest. Four matomes at horas, resulting in three points only, is a picture by no means exhilarating. Three of the games wore with the strongest teams they are called upon to meet, and the result is a loss of five points as compared with last season's efforts, and

League career. It is simply appalling. We are told that the League fixtures arranged on the "Fletcher Systom,” whatever that may be, and that by its means home and away matches, are

avoidad, but we must have been misinformed.

course such a generous proposal was accepted with soclamation by the committee of the Curraghmore. This reverend gentleman was the father of the late Lord William Beres ford, who was the third of four sons, the eldest being Lord Tyrons, who succeeded to the Marquiste. He, too, was a victim to his love of hunting, for he died from, injuries sustained in the field. During his illness he was tenderly zursed by his devoted wife, Lady Blanche, daughter of the late Duke of Beaufort. She was a great sportswoman, and took as keen an interest in horse, hound, and the noble gura of cricket as her father.

But Caiman had to run against that historie herse Figing Fez, nad Democrat was out of all form last year-and in any event he would not have had a walk-over against Diamond Jubileo. Thas "Bill" Beresford, never realised his crowning ambition to cocure what Lord Beresford so happily described as the blue ribbon of the Turf, Despite the disappointments of Democrat, Lord William Beresford won 46 raços last year, worth £24,523 in the aggregate, and he was, as everybody knows, the principal employer of Leater and Johnny Beiff-the brothers whose was the fontare of the Turf skill in the saddle in 1900. During this winter Lord William supplied the favourite for the Derby of 1991 in Volodyowski, the best tws-year-old of his year, who, like Star Shoot, is English bred.
