TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY PRESE."
Hongkong, 5th February,
Sin, I wish Birough your columns to thank the writer of the letter on the above anbject which appeared in your issue of Inst Saturday under the nom de plume of “Iutorested.”
The Bishop's remarks, denunciatory of the present system of mixed sebools in Hongkong, have been read with feelings of pain and in- dignation by the foreign-educated. Chinese here, and were more of them able to express their feelings in public print, the local papers would e ever helmed with "copy" for their corres pendence columns for many days to come. What grieves the Chinese more particularly is that, the remarks under criticism have been altered by the Bishop, who, in the same breath that ho condemus the association of the races
than half irin life-time in teaching Chi- of Chinese boys after basing taught them more than half his life-time in that they are not fit to by educated side by me with those of his own race, then all I can say is that the sooner he directs his efforts to other more wor thy channels, the better for him.

I shall not detain you with many remarks, as the result of the half-year's works ing and the present position of the company are so fully explained in the statements now inid before you that there is but little for one te comment upon. Your Directors are pleased that the improvement in the earnings warrants the payment of a bonus of two per cent. in addition half-year, and admits also of the substantial to the usual dividend of sight per cent, for the increase of $50,000 to the equalisation of divid and fund. The Bishop says (and I wish to lay specio] emphasis on this point there was a gulf be tween the Chiusman as a Chinaman, and au Englishman as an Englishman, and he did not think it was good for English boys to be educated by the side with Chinese boys. Ought not the Bishop, considering his profession and avowed sympathies, to mourn over the existence of this gulf which tends to retard the millennium and pniversal brotherhood, as ineal should be speedily concluded.
