The less of the Suthsiang Lin the rapids of the upper Yangtzo serves to emphasise what has previously been sald in your columns with regard to the almost insuperable difficulties atr tardant on any attempt at ruaning steamers over them. Theorists like Mr. Little and Pro- fessor Douglas have a good deal to answer for, for the manner in which they havo misled public opinion on this point. According to the latter it was merely the upsthy of the British mar chart that proventad British steamers from running regularly between Iching and Clinag king. Recognition of this, and the applica- error, they have fallen into. HIGHWAY ROBBERY AT SHAUKIWAN,
DYEL BLVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS STOLEN.
Hey.
cent
A highway robbery, similar in the manner of its perpetration to that on the Shatin Road lately, but differing in the fact of its having been committed almost in our midst, in broad day light, is reported by the police. On Saturday: at uluut noon, Lenag Chaing, a foreman at the Taik Sugar Refinery, Quarry Bay and partner in the Po Tai shop, 5, Dex Veux Road, eat out for Quarry Bay in a private ricksha, in which was a bag containing 8400 in twenty and ten cont pieces, aqually divided. He was secom- panied by Lo Tai Po, his partner in the Poi Tai shop, who also was in a private rickeha, and who carried a second bag containing $346 odd this sum, like, the first, being equally divided in twenty and tea pieces. The money was for the purpose of paying the holies at Quarry Bay. All went well for the greater part of the jour- and there was no thought of danger in the mind of either, whist past the North Point Battery, on the Shankiwan 31 armed with sticks, jumped out from the bushes fringing the road and attacked the two partners before the latter had time to recover from their surprise and take steps to save them- selves and their property. The robbers by sheer maight of umbors succeeded in vory soon overcoming the weak opposition offered then, and spatelling the two bags, containing between the yearly $750, from the rickshas, bolted up the hillside and got clear away, their escape being facilitated by the fact that the victims pursue pesbably dared not attempt to slay them. Instead they at once made their way to the nearest police station and reported the rob- hery. They say they can identify the men, of vhom descriptions have been issued by the police. The outrago bears on its face the stuny ef premeditation, and in this, aspect further resembles the robbery and murder on Shatin Road, when, as will be remembered, throo armed man waylaid and beat to death foreman who was carrying in a rioksba a sum of money wherewith to pay his master's coolies. The men in the present caso had by some means probably made themselves aware of the fact that the money was to be transmitted to Quarry Bar for the purpose stated, and laid their plans accordingly how successfully has already been seau. The police have aolively taken the case up, and there is every prospect of speedy arrests.

The Naval and Military Record of the 6th December publishes portraits and biographies of five naval and military heroes-General Buller, Lient General Fele Carew, the late Major General Pain Symons, Capt. Sir E. Chichostor, and Capt. Perey Scott. Of the latter our contemporary says

It is a real error for them, and does not affort only the correspondance with our calendar: for is throws their solar stations a day out. Thas the vernal equinox of 1900, which really fell on 21st March, is marked in their caloudars for 20th March. So also the autumnal equinox of the same year, which fell on the last day of the eighth moon, really came on the day which they marked as the first of the intercalary moou. The latter mistake is against the first principles of their system of intercalation, according to which an intercalary moon. must lie completely within one sign of the zodies; that is, the sun must not pass from one sign to another.
The Chinese moons, instead of months, bare an advantage over our syeton, inasmuch as they are natural divisions. Their calendar, teo, has the charm of variety; while the twenty-four solar stations, which are quite independent of the moon, fix annual spochs for agricultural and other purposes.
The Chinese calendar, more or less in its pre- tent form, is of very old origin. Errors crapt in naturally in the course of time, as they did into the Julian Calander, and the first Josuit missionaries turned to good secount their mathematical skill, by proving the inaccuracy of the untive calendar upon occasions of eclipses.
Fr. Schall was the first to introduce corrections,
and Fr. Verbiest, in the time of the Emperor Kang-hi, drow up the calendar in its present form, carrying his calculations as far as the year 2020. His ealendar has been faithfully followed ever since, with some rare exceptions, as when the year 1894, or rather the 20th year of Kwang Hsu, was curtailed of a day, en account of the disastrous war with the Japanese. So, whatever our Cantonese astronomers may say, wo alull probably have our Chinese New Year holiday on Shrove Tuesday, February 19th, and
