Then again missionaries are charged with using political influence and interfering with the law mits and civil disputes of the people. I
His Lordship took for his text Psalm li He said: Why do the beathon rage? The question is one which has been asked very often of late. Why hase the Chinese risen up as they have? For at the outset be it remembered that, as regards the duty of carrying on the work of missions, there is really no room for question ing. There are, we know, those who say that the Chinese do not need Christianity; that their own religious systems are better adapted to the people, and are sufficient for their needs. To the man who believes that Jesus is the Son of God, that God has given Him to be "the Saviour of the world," that Christ "is the propitio tion for our sins, and not for ours caly, but also for the sins of the whole
! To pass on then to the question of methods. Are they right who say that the methods of the modern missionarios are unsound? No one would of course argue that no mistakes are made. The work of missions is carried ou hy weak and fallible men, and in any human work mistakes are sure to occur. In the affairs of stats, in the conduct of military operations in all worldly matters mistakes' are made; and we have no reason to suppose that missionary operations will be carried on without any errors Moreover the field of operations is wide, and the circumstance of different missions differ so greatly that there is always much room for variety of method, and consequently also mob room for criticism. It is not unnatural, thers. fore, that those who are engaged in the work, who have made it their special, sady, should think somewhat lightly of the criticisms of those who really know nothing or next to nothing of its nature and its dificulties. At the same thue it would not be wise to ignors the opinions of those who onfioise, not from s spirit of carping hostility, but with friendly to
