INTERESTING TO SPORTSMEN.

The following copy of a letter has been sent to us for publication:-

H.B.M. Vien-Consulate, Mac00,

November 15th, 1900, SIR-I have the honour to inform you that the "prohibition" against shooting parties carrying arms through Macso has been with " drawn, and that I have not advised you before of this step as I thought the then remaining restrictions imposed, chiefly the necessity of applying personally at the Colonial Secretary's vifica for a permit, destroyed in a measure the utility of the withdrawal of the "prohibition as far as Hongkong sportsmen were concerned.

I now have the honour to inform you that · sportsmen wishing to bring gus to Macao for the purpose of shooting in Chinese territory. if arriving on Saturdays, can make written op- plication to the Colonial Secretary hore before. land. They must state who they are, and what they are, also give points of ingress and egress as far as the Province of Macao is concerned and adhere to these points,

I have the honour to request that you will make this public through the medium of the newspapers of your Colony-I havo, etc.,

PUNJOM MINING COMPANY, LIMITED.

BEFORE BY ME KERFOOT HUDHES Mr. W. Korfoot Hugus, the Manager at the Mines of the Punjom Mining Co., Ltd., has submittal a report dated Panggong, October 16, to Mr. W. H. Gaskell, Booretary of the Company, on the present condition and future prospects of the Company. Mr. Hughes sayu that on his arrival at the mines on 1st January there was no responsible person in charge of the property, which was in a very neglected state. General renovating work was immediately com- menced and has, and is being pursned. He attributes the cause of the delay in getting the machinery in order to the fact that they had not had the staff of mechanics to completo within the time the immense amount of work in hand. He then proceeds:

I wrote to Hongkong for this class of work. mon shortly after I arrived, but as none could bo got there (the fountain hend) owing to the briskness of dusiness, nor at Singapore for the same reasons, nor elsewhere en route, it has been Hobson's choice with me and delay has been the consequence; neither have we had all the ma terials necessary at hand nor the appliances to put everything into working order. These combined, and the want of a competent engi- neer, has been a most serions drawback, and also cause of additional delay, but we are getting on with it as epentily as circumstances will permit. I may also mention that until the shutting-up bfake Guban Extablishment much of the fitters' time was taken up to provide for the urgent wants from that quarter, and latterly the Dam has been a great and constant drain on the ro- sources of the Itting shop, and all the black smiths of No. 2 shop, have been exclusively employed with dam requirements and no extra blacksmiths, could be picked up in these parts.

The prosent condition, although apparently not so reseate, is perfectly scund and genuine, and all the work which has been done is sub and plant are being, and will be, put as soon as possible into serviceable condition and every- There are in stock some powerful and valuable thing in readiness for use at a moment's notice.
