THE REAL CONSPIRACY.
THE MISLED
That principio for which we have been so long striving is the crux of the present struggle, and my own belief is that when this war is over a large number of Datch farmers in this country will throw in their lot with us on The impudence of those statements, that Eng this basis, that noi her shall claim any right of land was desirous to seize the Transvaal for its preference over the other. We have no feeling gold, is shown by these facts which I have dwelt against them. We have lived with them, shot upon, and which are vouched for by the brother with them, visited with them, and we find, ewing of the present Cape Prime Minister, and uni- I suppose it is to the race affinity, there is not Tersally believed, viz, that years and years agones between us. But they have been misled Mr. Reitz vowed that the one aim and'ambition of his life was to drive England out of Africa. What did we find when this war broke out? We found that the two Republics had obtained artillery of the very highest class, and im mense stores of ammunition, and we know tlut if England had been involved in European- complications, the consequences for her would have been most serious. Therefore the hont is on the other leg. This was not conspiracy on the part of England to seise the neighbouring Republies, but it has been long, long con
by these gange at Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and even Capetown, and I say that now they have not to settle with us, the Uitlanders, they live got to settle with those who have used them for their own base and immoral purposes-I speak warmly because I have been through it all.

SINGAPORE ESTIMATES FOR 1901.
Reports by Select Committees on the Esti- nates for 1901 have been laid before Council at Singapore. The Committee for Singapore and Malacca--Messrs. Egerton, Merewether, Au thonist, Hill, Burkinshaw, Napier Laird, Earle, and Lim Boon Keng-reported in favour of increasing the Estimates for Singapore by $166,743. Two clerks, to cost $1,500 a year, have been added to the Treasury staff. It is understood, however, that, an increase of work in connection with the Fedorated Malay States accounts partly necessitates the employment of these clerks, the Federated Malay States will be asked to hear a portion of the cost. Division of opinion arose as to spending $100,000 on an estimate of $276,000 upon a Thres of the unofficial members held that the money would be better spent on enlarging or duplicating Cavenagh Bridge or, on further improving the Singapore liver or on larger

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "DAILY PRESS.** Taikoku Shinkigai, Formoss,, 19th October. SIR-It is not right to state that if the Dou. 8 Company had looked ahead" some years ago, they might still be possessors of profitable trade. Their attempt to retain a monopoly of
the Chinese to Christian influences in the United States and in Singapore, show the hope- lessness of all attempts to convert that race. Since there is this overpowering an- tecedent improbability of success, what justifi- cation is there for allowing men, women and children to run the awful risks of missionary work in Chim?
