THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER, We have entered upon the last football season. of the nineteenth century. The close peried Branch came to an end with the last day of Angust, but the clubs over the border had already bean hard at it for nearly a fortnight. The first of September is the day appointed for a start by the Football Association, and many people are of the opinion that this is all: too soon. Eight months is a pretty long innings. We have. not had to wait long for something to talk about. The opening day was made memorable by one result alone, and that was the signal triumph of Bury at, Bramall-lune. It fell to the lot of the Cigg-laners to impose the first defeat on Sheffield United last season, and the very next time they got them on the same spot gain they placed "ditto" to their account. They have therefore conquered the Sheffielders three times in succession-a triple performance that is really surprising. Until Bury bat them on the 20th January, 1900, not, once had the Unital het their master's, but after the charm was broken they had a full share of re- erses. In McLuokię the Lancashira oluh kava a centre forward who has been much sought affer, but the Committes aro happily in a 'posi. | tion to resist every golden temptation. When Bary literally ran away from Southampton in JEWELRY, the F.A. Cup final at the close of last season IVORY WARE SILKS, and GRASS perplo looked on and wondered, bat it was no fluke. It would be interesting to get the candid opinion of Ernest Needham about the lively cupholders.
