CHAPTER XIV.

A THEORY,

Half an hour later I stood beside the body of Colonel Chetwode, making a complete and thorough examination.

After its discovery it had been carried to one of the dressing-rooms, and lay there cold and rigid, upon the mattresses of a small iron bed stasel. It was still clothed just as it had been found, for the local police had given orders that it should not be touched before the arrival of the detectives from headquarters.

The body was that of a tall thin man with aquiline refined features, about sixty or so, with iron-grey hair and moustache, and a brow lined with care and suxiety. His ning clothes, wet and muddy, in the broad light of day gave the corpso a disreputable, neglected an pearance, which was rendered even more strik ing by his dishevelled hair and moustacho sant- ted with dried mad.

Ballen was alone with 108, his companions being at the spot where the bedly had been found, and as I had proceeded to draw up the blind and examine the wound in the dead man's scalp, he stood by in silence, watching my examination.

The wound near the base of the skull was, I found to say surprise, quite a superficial ous. By its appearance I saw that this police doctor had probed it, and quickly found that the injury was not of such a nature as to have cancel death.

Woll Bullon asked naxiously. do you make out of it, Doctor P

Thon how, is your opinion was the crine committed? What, do you suppose, was the weapon used?" he asked

At present I'm unable to say." I responded. "The natural conclusion is that it was caused bra blow from a life-preserver; yet a round knet could never have inflicted such a wound I incline to the opinion that the wound might have been caused by falling from the Iritiga upen the rough stones below."

By the aid of my probe I satisfied myself that the bone was not fractured, as it would have been by n deliberate blow dealt from behind. The nature of the wound, indeed, was very much as if it had men caused by the unfortunate men's head coming into contact with some sharp stone.

Then, after very careful investigation, last- ing over half-an-hour, during which I took a number of accurate measurements which might be used later in the identification of the weapon,

I came to the ruther vague conclusion that the vezimo had been committed not by a blow, but

by hurling the victim from the little bridge,
