The wives of the diplomats and all the women and children who were besieged in Peking, are on their way to Tientsin, escorted by a baily of Japanese marines. From the latter port, the [Japanese] refugees will be conveyed to Japan in a transport or a crniser.

The coal strike at Cardiff which was going on when the last nail left has greatly affected the loading of coal transports for the Far East, and some of the stamers have gone round to Barry, to take in cargo. The coal owners of Cardiff have had a conferents with the Admiralty with a view, it is understood, of negotiating for the purchase of cargoes affout to replenish the depots abroad.

Germany has purchased large consignments of coal in Britiels Columbia for transports to carry to China, but in consequence of the United States Government lacing an option on all the available steamers, there will be some time and trouble before the coal can be got to the Ger mon feat.

The Indian troops grinned their pleasure, and generally aswered the greetings extended to them with the greatest heartiness.

The Legation has been fortified in the strongest way, thanks to an American zais- sionary maued framewell. An elaborate system of loopholed walls and deep tronches was de vised to present the enemy mining. The enemy had workin up to within & few yards of these trenches, and the defendlers could even hear their officers urging and encouraging the troops to rush in and massacre the foreigners.

Provisions had grown woefully short, and there was very little horse meat remaining The shortness of ammunition was another serious trouble,
