BRITISH TRADE IN, CHINA, A- Mr. Joseph Walton asked the Undoc-Socre- lary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he was aware that British-owned steamers apacially. bailt to trade under the agreement with the
Chinese Government, which authorised British ships to carey. British goods to every riverside town and statius, were being taken off the West River in cousquence of not being allowed to load or discharge cargo at places between treaty ports; and whether Her Majesty' Government would insist on the carrying out of the agreement as to navigation on inland waterways in its entirely.
Mr. Brodrick: We have not heard of any British steamers bating beau taken off the West River in the circumstances referred to The agreement with the Chinese Government permitted foreigners to trule in steamers where native boats und bese permittel. This did not include every riverside town and station. The
