A few days ago I was disenssing the subject, with one of the oldest professional athletes and gymnasts in the country and be nemured me there was nothing like the interest taken in his, gymmaint there. was a dozen years. Questioned more closely, we came to thembling block, the amateur and professional definition. Ir many instances.. he had watched the progress of a promising youth who showell suiouce, pluck, and a good tomper. At the "gym." the Ind would reach the topmost rung of the ladder, and possibly enter some swaticar compotitios. The inevitable" followed. Led away by the momentary sic cess, be would fall an easy prey to some of the fringo" always on the look-out for likely lads, a match would be arrange, and, hey presto, the well-meaning, harmless youth would wake on morning to find himself s fall-fledged professional. L'his is only ope of the many pitfalls which our youths who spe fond of boxing anre to avoid. But there is so mach to be said in favour of aequiring sotze know- lodge of the art that I shout warmly welcome any movement in the direction of popularising it a little more.
