PASTEURISH AT WORK.

Some time age, von may remombar, writes us an Indian officer realling in France, I had the pleasure of sending, yon a short com munication relative to the universal helial oblaining in France in regard to the absolute certainty of the Pasteur cure for hydrophobia, My latter to you, attracted some attention, bonuse at the time I wrotu a controversy was going on in the Tudian prees as to the offosey of M. Pasteur's remedy, a Judge of the High Court Calcats (if my memory serves me right) having expressed su opinion, ranched in rather strong terms, that Pasteur's care for hydrophobia was a delaktion' and 'u stare, Wall, Jesterday the French papers published the statistics of the Pasteur Institute for 1895, and certainly the #guros given are worth serions sorsideration, Inat year, out of 1,29 parrons treated as having been bitten by med dogs, only ties died. New when it is remembered (an In Petit Journal points out) that at the beginning of these, anti-rabies in- acalations in 1896 twenty-five persons died ont of 2,671 treated, it must be admitted that great progress has been made. As regards the nationality of the patients insulated at the ...Pasteur Institute in 1895, the following details are given, and they are of interest na showing that's good number of our fellow.couetrymau have had aufivit faith in M. Pastor's romedy to subunit themselves to his treatment.

India with 20, surely a very consider able number, if it means, as I suppose it doon, that all the 20 wero Europeans, Spain son 11 to be treated, Belgium and Hvl. laad each 6, Greece, and Turkey 2, Now, oddly enough, the very day these curious statistics were pablished in the Petit Journal, the Blanderd had a letter from that excellent lady, Miss Brancas Power Coble, denouncing the Pastour treatment in the most vigorens lugunge. The ocasion of her writing to the Standard was this. There has just been started in London & Baisson Institute" for the are, by means of the vapour baths of people bitten

mad dogs. Miss Cobbe writes in support of this now Institute, and, says: "Many persons who justly abher Pasteurism as combination of colossal Junckery. and pitiless cruelty will desiro, I doubt not, to secure a permanent foundation for tbs, new Institute, that in futurs English al- ferers from the bites of rabid ammale will always, and open, and at their doors, a safe, cheap, and harmless alternativo to the ne rash to Paria for iqoanlution with time poisonous virus." To brand the system which was the glory of Pesten's Kfs, and the gradual devolop ment of which has ceased him to be regarded not only in France but generally throughout. Europe as one of the chief benefactors of suffer ing humanity, as a combination of colassal. quackery and pitiless cruelty is ther sin phatic, to say the least. I know nothing about the scientific side of Pasteur's famous discovery, but living in his country I have come to krew that he has practically extinguished hydro phobia in France. Whether it is the belief, the cake and assured belief; that everybody hus in Pasteur's remedy acts in itself as a serlative and antidote to the disease so much dreaded in other contries, I don't know. But nobody in Franco reema dlarmed when bitten by a mul dog. The sufferer gets into the first train to Paris, and departs with a light heart. Only last weak' case occurred not fer from where I am living which is typical of what is constantly happening all over France. An old man bad a favourite dog to which sho was quite devoted. A few days ago it fell sick and would not ost This so distromed its mistress that she snatcheð up her pet and ried to force open its mouth with the viow of forcing the food down its throat. As might hava bron arpceted, the brute snapped exvagely at the old ladly, and bit her very severely on the right thumb. Sho managed to shut the log in the house, and went. and called her son, who was at work out of doors, Elo came and killed the dog, carrying.its buly be the veterinary surgeon who, after an autogay. declared the late to be undoubtedly suffering from rabice. This of course caused considerable commotion, and a deputation of neighbours waited on the Mayor to ask him to read the old woman to Paris at the public expence, so that she might be treated at the Pasteur Instituto Mle Aloire was desol. Ho had no funds for the purpose, and could do nothing. The whole neighbourhood was in consternation. Was thir poor woman to got hydrophobia because there were no fnude available to send her to Paris F Everybody talked at, once, and pictured the unfortunate old lady dying u berrible death, because there www no money to send her to the Pestear Instinte. But the French are kindly people, End though the neighbours were poor they subscribed the money among them. selves and saub the sufferer off to Paris in triumph, xeither she nor any na of them kaving any doubt of bar speedy cure. Now was the man who has thus brought hops and com- fort to so many thousands of stricker poopla a colossal quack," to use.
