As a rule, the village, and of course. the tours, were evorywhere wealthy food was plentiful and chaap; life comfortable for China and work abundant. Except in the large towns no such sight as a cadaverous opium-besotten face was ever seen by me, though it is not difficult as aruls to discern. from the tint of the chook and the colour of the eyeball who smokes and who does not smoke. The popular notion that opium-emaking can not be suddenly abandoned without danger is quite mistaken. The inmates of the Hong- Fong prisuus aro never alowed to smoke. a single pipe. Tene, advanced casos aro treated for time with pills or anti-opium medicines; but that is all. "So long as physical force or the requisite force of will is at hand, soy saker can be cured of the habit Bummarily.

My next experience was the neighbourhood of Toschow, where. at differnt times, I spent the best part of three years. The general im pression left upon me was that piam smoking did more damige hero than in the Canton ro glen. The people are more voluptaonely in- elined; loss principled, less capable of resisting temptation, not so industrious and persevering, dirtier, and poorer. I can therefore wall-un- derstand the missionaries of Poochow taking s much stronger view than would be justified in Szechuer.

After this I spent more than two years in the island of Hainan, where I must say I noticed very liftio of the evil effest so marked at Foochow yot it is certain that at least 2,000 clients a dar must be commed in the island.

In Tonkin it appeared to me that the exces sively high price of opinim sated unimal witste and poverty. Hero-for-the-rst time, I come across Europeans who smoked, and it is a well- authenticated fuot, which, I have frequently myssif soen disenssod in the local French journals, that considerable numbers of Franah- neh have taken to the hatit: from what I could learn, it affects them even moro prejudi- cially than it does the Chiness,
