́of the horso, na thor have done winos Homer, when our painters devotes lifetimo to the study of his anatomy and his graceful attitudes, and when our soulptors, in chiselling the statue of a great, man, produce the most inspiring effect with a figure mounted on a spirited charger, it is within bounds to say the the hama is a per- mansat fixture, in our scheme of life, equally with the dog and the bird. Selasco has done and is. doing marvellous things, but I doubt if it can arowd off the earth any of the descendants of Eko oxiginal company that inhabited Nosh's Ark Anecdotes of the horse have filled hany's book testifying to his intelligence, dness, and courage. A word of the intelligence and almost human sympathy of one horse I know. Her master, a valued friend of mine, was in deep dis tress over business troubles, and fito one night, mabis to sleep, he pounted his favourite saddle- horse and rade down the valley to the shores of the Intro. Dismounting, he let the borgs wan-ON der off by herself while he sat on a fallen tree and thought. As he sat there, his mind harassed ON by doubt and fear as to which of two moves, should make on the morrow, by some instinctive both franght with serious consequences, he power the horse seemed to realise his troubles, and, whinnying, came up. alowly and gently rested her head on her master's shredder, as if to outer and courte him. Professor Alexander Graham Bell has put forth a suggestion which is worthy of attention. Having observed in Paris the popularity of the horseless vehicle, as indicating man's desire for more rapid locomo the suggests the application of the home to the bicycle principle, exthor in the tricycle or the quadricycle. He thinks that if a hora could be so mounted as to see his limbe in the revolution of wheels geared as in s bicycle, the multiplication of energy would be such as to pro- native domination of the islands. But how capped a vehicle very rapidly, and shis with com a republic refuse the fronobies to the Japanese who are settlers there when they baru their parative ease on the horse's part. In other institutions on the American system, which words, he would make a bicycle-rider of the absolutely gave the franchise to American horse, clear of the ground when in nation OLIVER MCKEE in Láppéncolța Magazûre.. negro slaveR? If tha Japanse get the franchise they will rule the islands, and the Hawaiian group will really become a dependency E Japan That a very serious problem, not only for us, but also for America and England, bocarso the result would be a large Japanese settlement comparatively clore to America and right be tween Canuda---that is, the Western States of Canada--and our own country. To that extent

I consider that one of the future problems of Hawaii is the presence of the Japanese There are more than 25,000 there, who are principally men, and many of them have been trined in the army. There are about 40,000 Hawaiian and half-castes, abont 13,000 Portuguese, about the same nam ber of Chinese, and the remainder of the pop » lation, which is only a very small part of it, con- sists of Amerions and Europeans. With the Hawaiians left out of the government of the country the Japanese would be the largest ele. ment there, and they have demanded the tran- chise. I do not see how the Republic of Hawaii, if it lasts in its present form, can refuse it to them. They are intelligent and industrious, and they have gons there to stay. Thomonarch- ical Government might be justified in.con- tinuing to treat them ne aliens monarchical Government that merely continued the old
