The drive going in on the west leader is in 36 fest. A good deal of water is coming out of the face. and as the leader was vory small and cat we good I have stopped it, and am now stoping over the buck of the drive both on this and the one going east, both of which onery fair go13.

This gives 100 feet of backs to work below the No. 1 Lovel. I expect to hayo all the work requised in, opening out and the now 10 feel pump into position and the lodo cat during the ensuing month.

No. 1 Level. In the south and of the main drive" the lude continues to look as well as over the full width of the drive being fa ornality stuff which shows fair gold. In the leading stop. the Jode is fully 15 feet and abows fair gold all through it. I am pleased to report a very favourable change in the north east In re-timbucing the level or was cut in the hanging wall and s. aliort oroasent waa driven to so the width of it. We are 10 ft. in the Iude nnd not yet through it; the stone looks very well. The ground is very soft and treach. orous and is making a lot of water in the face great care has to be taken in working it. It appears wikere tho lode made a pinch in the main lodu, it has been thrown over to the seat into the hanging wall. There is no change to report in the stops, which still continue to show large bodies of aro.

Western Lode.-Stoping is being carried on As usual. The ore body still continues to extout south far beyond the limits of where I expected it to go, and carries fair gold. A small gir shaft is being sunk from the enrisoo 10 feet south of bur old workings for sending down. timber and for ventilating those workings, which are now getting vary hat. These work ings will bear out a great deal more ernahing. staff than I exported.

Bukit Malecrs-Since the Chinese Now Your good progress has bo made with sinking the engine shaft, which is now down between 60 and 70 feet. The ground pontinues rury favourable for winking, but is making a goed deal of water.

THE MERCANTILE MARINE AND

THE NAVY

The highly interesting foctare delivered last week at The Royal United Servics Institution by Commander W. F. Cahorne, R.N.R.. doult primarily with the Merchant Service, and only secondarily with the Navy, yet the two services are so early connected that any anggestions coming from a prominent offiper of the Morchant Service are worthy of attention. Dealing with “Our Senborne Cowmeere und Mercantily Marine," the lecturer natursfly devoted nest of bis paper to fasta about the Merchant Navy, its achievements in the past, its growth, and its carrying powers. We must pass over these intorcating fnats and compe direct to the relation between the Merchant Ser vice and the Navy as understood by Commander Caborne. Like many other goalvas odlicera of the Royal Naval Reserve, Commander Caberne firmly believes that the Nary is dependent upon | the Merchant Service for a esorce of oficara and enfor war purposes. This view is maĖ: prior to 1653 weĥkinnons. ported by history, Fervico in the Navy had zob.boo introduced, and it is, consognently only during the past forty years that the personnel of the Navy has become partly independent of the Merchant Navy.

Lord Brassey insists that "A navy unsupported by un extensive mercantile marine 58 o hothouse plant, which may indeed produce grent results for a time, but cannot endure the savere grain of a long protracted war." The proposition is self-ovident, and so fue as past cón- ditions are concerned bas hea amply proved in history. Yet, on the other hand, the on bitkins, of naval service hare so changed that in forty years the country has been provided with an active list of over eighty thousand men, and if the expingo maat be facul this force can he unreased almost indezitely. The more economical and judicious policy is to build up a truined reserve, and Commander Cabrina's facture gives us some up-to-date and unaful figures dealing with the Merchant Service. Wo have resoutly alluded to the desirability of in. creasing the Royal Naval Reserve, and, at the same time, of improving the ceiengy of the force. There are seine natal writers who deng the possibility of effecting any material increase in the reserve, and others who doubt the possibility of thoroughly training the men already enrolled. These are pessimistic viewa at best for there can be no real doubt that England is better able to build up an economical and efficient Naral Reserse than any other conatry.

that it in a pratical ens. The only important obfection Hiraly to be raised ngalusa fb is the expense of apprenticing lads at the ect of the Stato, but oven this expones will be far below. that of materially adding to the estive persoanek One thing is clear if the country means to have a strong Naval Reserve it will have to pay for it. It's useless to enroll numbers of untrained mon, and to onli amok a foros a Naval Rosurve-Naval and Military Record.
