THE GREAT HEAT IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The Sydney Morning Herald dd 22nd January has, the following article on the great heat which had for..some time proviewly heen experienced in New South Wales:-

The heat-ware of last wook is astlanted to have cost New South Wales upwards of P80) lives The figures show that the riotropolis has suffered proportionately with the rest of. the colour during this torrible wook Our reporter a cortained the death-rabe bed about doubled throughout the city and culerhey were it appears that no fewer thar 120 deaths are due to heat, Children and aged person superbal in large numbers. It is rather sur prising to learn that the affect of the beat bas been so avere in the metropolitan area. The news from day to day contained only notes of such, fost cases as had ended fatally under trept mont. in the public hospitals, and at the anime time the country tolagrams were full of lament able details about fus, loss of life throughor, the interior. People in Sydney worn therefore ́apt to think that the worst overgs of the Weather was spent upon the country, forgotting that the records of temperature showed a zange of fost as great and contintious here as anywhere else, which was certain te olnim victims. Wa have to add to the 120 deaths that make up the lowest estimate of this metropolitan mortality (14 recorded in our telegrams from all parts of the country as having takon place during last Tenk. The latter number does not protend to completon. In some reports the casos are not treated individually. A anmber of patients which must be large, are yet under treatment privately or in public institutious for now arising out of the heat, and it is to be feared that we have not yet done with the mortality It has to be borne in mind, however, thahalli Horte of deaths are ascribed to any prevailing, panic. A few years ago influenza was a torm Covering all manner of illness, and so perhaps the direct influence of heat on mortality is less thau is popularly believed.
