as was at commended by him in 1880, the Dr W. Arnold Americans having profited aiready by the suggesses C. & J. Baltas tion. This distillation of oleio acid gives a body Mr. H. Bekkey,
Mr. Barindongus called ofere or isilone; of margariɑ'mid, a mar- garons of stearic acid, stearone, These bodies are mostral, do not become ranoid, do not saponify, and bahars like mineral oils without the same inconveniences. The distillation of 200 pounds of olois acid with 50 pounds of limb gives 160 paunda" of neutral oil. With tallow and other fats are obtained neutral oils of dif- feront consistencies, and a rendering of 75 per cent can be relied upon. Those neutral grens09 resist all chemical agents execpt chlorine gas, which does not exist in a fren state in the in- dustries for which theo lubricants are designed.
The lighting, of ordinary railway care by electricity has been for aumo years practicable. on trains that aro novor disided, but it is claimed that the now system of Mr. Arthur B. Gill, now being introduced by a London Arm, is the first to solve the difficult problem of giving such mr its own, itvispendent elsobrio Ught pleat. The electric generator and a storge battery are placed under the door of the car. Taking up no useful space. The dynamo is driven by a bolt from a pulley ou the car axle, and is so arranged that a train speed of 15 or 20 miles an hour gires suficient current to light the car, while any increase boyond this current and the small surplus necessary to charge the storage battery is prevented by the slipping of the bolt. As the train speed falls below that required to onable the dynoma to feed, the lamps, su automatic switch turns on the encremt.of the storage battery. The vacation in the intensity of the light supplied is said to bo eurprisingly small, the dynamo and switch tre so carefully protected from dust as to suffer little wear and to need little attention, and the extra load on the bourpotive does not exceed one-half horse- power per car. The cost is estimated about $250 for each car. A considerable number of English rallways are already lighting single eats and trains by this system, and the simplicity and effectiveness of the method give promine of great further SUCCESS.
