are either analing who have never been under restraint or else former inmates of asylums who have been released. In the former base there is nearly always evidence to the effect that he had besn-noflood to be strange in his manner for some time," or "she had never been quite Aole of -horself since the birth of the obîld."

homicide or suivile are committed every day, in sore part of the country or other, by endoubted lunatics who have never been considered su aiently insane to be placed in sa asylum, and whem no doctor could cards without serious risk of an action for damages. But of late there has been a noted incioase of tragedias catered by lunatics who have been released frem soms esylum as oured. It is, of course, highly desirable that no one should be detained if an asylum a day longer than necessary; but in the present state of public opinion there is a tendency to release insaties too soon. A case I ones at Bedlam impressed this very strongly on my mind. I was going round with the medical officer when we came upon one of thepatients, aludy of perfectlysano appear ance and very pleasant addres. "Oh, doctor," she said, "don't you think I might go out now I do want to go home so much. I am sure I am woll onough." The doctor said: No. I am Afraid I can't let you go just yet, Mrs." "Oh, do! See how wall I n "Yen," replied the doctor, but remember what happened when I sent you here befare. You trial to. kill your children." She was a good deal Well, yes, I did. I can't think basked. what parassed me." And she pleaded no more. I bese not the sightest doubt that that lady would have been pronounced, partently game in any court of law, and that the BBOR.D.F.. AUSTRALIAN HORSES.

Australian horses, thoroughbreds and other. wise, are generally sound, and have excellent lege which stand an enormons woount of work on hard grond Ninety per cent of the ve horren van without skoss or plates on, and this on going an English trainer would be afraid, to Fallop his horses en. If the pedigree of any good Lorse racehores in the colonies is traced tack. it will be found to contain several of-the-most-strain of thoroughbrat English blood. Climate has, however, much to do with odifying Lorsor, ant even imported horses seem to change when they have been in tho colonies some years. There is a difference in the appearance of Australian and English race- horses, the system of training no-doubt having mach to do with it. Au to the respective merits of English and colonialrovehorses it is a difficult mattor to decide. I think India would be the best place for a trial test, as it is the "halfway honga" bedween the two countries. Suck horses as Myall King and Highbera hava held their own against all comeLA in India in the Viceroy's Cap, the former. winning it three times and the latter twion. Myall King was certainly not a first- class horse in Austealin, and although on his best form Highborn could be placed in the first class, he was not at the top of tho tree in this close. The proportion of good. rasaborsen to bed is higher I think in Australia than in England and their slay Eng powere dro more than equal to these of the home" racord Five-sad-twenty to flirty horses do zat olien start for and a half or two mile race in England; and

It would surprise a stranger from the old country well versed in the management of horses, to see how some of the upcountry horses are ridden and diren in Australia. Most of the station horses are wonderful aimals, and how they stand the work is a mystery, as they are generally grass fed. At Wintar Station, Lonth, naar Honake, in the western district of New South Wales, they have some hardy horses, typical station nigs Winbar is raw of the largest elations in the colony. It comprises an area of 000 squaro walls, or, in other words, 582,000 acres Mr. E Amell, one of the managers, is a friend of mine, and KaiR AN AN- thusiastic lover of bore. Daring the shearing Beason at Winbar the mustering borses that is, the horses used by the men who muster the sheep, 130,000 of which were shorn fa the 1894 thooring are changed fortnightly, un that for two weeks at a stretch they bare to carry sudom Issy than twelve stone day after day a distanco of from forly to afty miles, over stony country and broken ground, frequently stumbling into rabbit burrows and they stand, this sort of work yenz after post. On Winbar Station they have her eighteen and nineteen years. ok, as clean on the legs an eror they were, as mure-footel ne anyone could wish. I need Burdly say there is good blood in their veins most of them any the progeny of Corcomb, who was by Tattendon out of Vanity. Some of these horses have car- ried a thirteen-stone man from Winbar to Boorko, a. distance of ninety miles, in a day of -twelve. hours. Thcao horses have wonderful staying powers, and alibongh some of them are not match to look at, they are very deceptive when tackled. Baggy horses are driven at s rate that would stonish anyone unaccustomed to tho rapid mode of going univerally adopted. A doxen miles at n fair gallop. is a more-trifle end the raturn journoy is generally acomplished in double quick time, for endurance and speed it would be a bord walter to bent these buch-bred horses. Cobs, hacks, and carriago horses for town driving are batter than they were ten" years ago, but there is ream for Doprovement still. There is not the style about them soOR in English-bred horses of this class. Somno excellent horses are real for the Indian market, and most of them have good blood alther ou their ire's or dam's side,or on both The majority of branders hure discovered that a dash of the thoroughbred a deskled improve mgat in the horses use for any mounts and general Indian work NAT GOULD, in the Illustrated Sporting casd Dramatic Times,
