The stories illustrating the eagraity of tho elephant are innumerable, but few are moru remarkable than the following ons recorded by writer in a Bombay paper upon the authority of an artillery offoer, who was a witness of the incident: The battering train, going to the Biega Seringapatam bad to cross the sandy bed of a river that resembles other rivers in the Est, which have during the summer season but a small stream of water running through them. though their beds are mostly of considerable breadth, vary basry for draught and abounding in qaickand. It happened that an artilleryman, who was seated on the tumbril of the guns, by sczja sooident fell off in ancha situation that in amimite or two the hind wheel must have gone dree him. The elephant, which was stationed behind the gun, perceiving the predicament in which the man was. Instantly, without any warning from its keeper, lifted up the wheel with its trunk, and kept it suspended till the sarriage had passed clear of him."

An interesting experiment was made recently at the office of Edison's Phonograph Company, in London. Dr. L.-White, of Harly-strent, han a patient, who, although baring all the ap pearance of perfect health, has a defect in his speech of a woat singular character. The patient, an English boy, ten years old, is unable to speak bia naziva language, but a jargon which cannot be understood, Many doctors have examined him, but could not exactly diagnose the can of the phenomenon, and it was quietionable whether the lnd spoke the unto thing, twice in the same way, and the only way to lisoar whether he did so or not was to get him to speak to the phono- graph. The boy, in the presence of vocal gentlemen, was asked to speak the Lord'a Fraser and the alphabet. Several cylinders were made Viki In this way, and when a comparison was instituted between the varions photograms it was found mgkang... that there was no variation in the spoken words, flipbang
