The Chinese Government kas lately introducet American methods of mining inte sa extensive mining district in Mongolia

The looty loated in Ku-Shan-Tin, samall hamlet situat -1 about 150 miles north of the great wall, and only 50 miles distret from: Joho, the capital of the province. At this point thore are velas of lead ore, carrying silver and occurring in lime- stems. The Chinese works have boon carried on in precisely the some way that the Greeks and Romans Enew, and without the slightest aOR razice upon those methods.

It is noteworthy that the Chinese never advan- oed far enough in mining skill to invent the system of channeling or cutting parallel grovES in the face of the rock, which leaves intervening ridges that can be broken down by wedges" This method, which is more expetitious than shipping away the whole facs of the rock, and which was well known to the srcient minore in Europa. Bees to be a step beyond the mining develop. ment of the Morgoltaas Anether penaliarity of their work is the use of extremely heavy ham- 1er 13 to 15 pounds being an ordinary weight for single hand hammers, while in other coun trins the weight is usually less than 5 pounds The Chiasse corelder that steel should not strike steel, and consequently the face of the hammer is made of soft iron, which soon wears into a deep oup, forming a tool which no civilised winer coahl use with safety.
