THE NORTH BORNEO WAR.

THE JUSTICE OF IT DEFENDED BY A WELL, INFORMED OBSERVER. "J.J.F.," who will be readily recognised in this colony by his jeitiak, writes as follows to the Straits Times →→→

I have recently roturned from British North Borneo, and during my stay there I had un- usually good opportunities of becoming acquaint.. od with the circumstances out of which the le war there arose, and with the events that led to and accompanied the armistice and treaty now so happily concluded. The accounts you have zooived from your Sarawak correspondent seem hardly to do justice to the North Hornar Cam- pany, and your abort article of Saturday on the sabgeot must leave on the minds of your readers an impression anything but favourable to the Company and its proceedings. Will you kindly permit mo to state the case, as the officials of the North Borneo Company would. I think, them. Belves stato it if they were at liberty to address you on the subject. In this way your readers will have both sides of the question before them. The Pangeran Shahender is or was an iode- pendent chieftain, owning and ruling, under grants from the Saltas of Brunei, a small tract of territory known as Padus Danit. 'The Padas Damit is a river canning into the sen nairly 20 counter lying between twa much larger river, opposite Labuan, and draining the delta like

the Padas Besar to the soath, and the Fados. Elias to the north. This little indepandant State is surrounded on all sides by the territories of the North Bernso Company, and the first and primary dispute between the Company and the Pangeran was as to boundaries. He chim- ed that his rights extended from the banks of i the Padas Bear on the south to the banks of the Padas. Klias on the north. The British North Borneo Company, fortified by a formal declaration ander the siguniarva and sale of the Sultan of Brunei and his ministers, denied this, and asserted that the Pangeran's tarritary was limited to the area drained by the Fadas Damit, and that is bonadary line to the south was the water diride between tho Fadas Damit and Pades Besar, and on the north the divide between the watersheds of the Padas Dauit and Padas Klise respectively. This dis- puted question of boucdarios is, of course, at the bottom of the whole tronbla It has been going on for some years, and the Sultan of Brand has baens too feebin to enforce respect for bis decision, which was against the Pauguran.
