A meeting of six goatlemen was held this after- noon at the Exchango building to protost. against the Chinese Immigration Restriction_..... Bill affecting Chimness already residing in the colony and British-born subjects. Mr. W. H Calder, the convener of the mosting, explained that the meeting had been hurriedly called in graťRİN, order that an expression of opinion might be promentad to the Connell bəfore the bill was dealt with by them. He moved resolutious-1. Jizprasting the opinion that the bill should only deal with immigrants to arrive. 2. That slan six of the draft bill at the conforaase, makingong- it a misdemeanour for a Chinese, though British born, to proced by land from one colony to aa- other, is attaily repugnant to the common feal- ings of bumanity, and a reversal of ull ideas ĐỀ British fair play and freedom, and if enacted would fix a deep and Isting stain on vur young national character. Mr. R. Reid seconded the motious characterising the passage of the me- seo by the Assembly as su not of barbarism. The Rev. W. Gray Dizon, Mr. J. G. Johnson, and the Roy.-T. Lavez supported the resolutions, which were carried. It was decided to forward them to the Legislative Council.
