The anomalous state of things might be remedied by the substitution of a coroner's ́inquest, with a jury to pronounce a formal ver- diet, which, with as little delay as possible, could zettle whether the evidence pointed to inoon- diarism or accident. For our own part we should be glad to have an expression of opinion en this important subject from the various re- prosentatives of fra insuranoa companies in the city, and it would also form an interesting Bubiset for discussion by the mombers of the Chamber of Comusores, Fire Insurance is mers- ly an indemnity for boss upon the value of goods or property covered, and is by no means Hot to be a kouros whereby a tradesman, by not which may or may not be proved oriminal, obtain a suzu of manoy for his pleasure, conven- lenos, or profit. On the same subject the following appears in

parliamentary Mansion it is well to call attention to this important subject, and urge the immediate appointment of fire coroners. There is a genem! complaint among fire offices that incendiary fires are of constant occurrence; but the companies, aren in these cases, pay, because abeolate proof is diffent, and they are-afraid of becoming known as Irtigious. It is hard that this state of things should exist; but the offices to a great extent recoup their losses by additional promiums. In this way the community of insurors is made to pay the penalty of its own lakewarmnase in a matter of really vit importance. Unfortunately Braat statistics 20 wanting, but the general opinion among those bast informed is that incendiarism is practised to an alarming extent. The case of Whiteley naturally presents itself to the mird. If macailigent buildings and his enormas stock have been destroyed four or five tles, and the impression is that in eash osss the hand of the incendiary has fired the premises And yes there was no inquest on these calamitous burnings until the last cocasion, andoven then the

be Insurance Agent:-On the eve of taen Tai Insanoo Company, Limited-Tis. 148

inquiry was not as to the origin of the fire, but as

to the cause of the death of four men who were killed by the falling of a wall. The neglect which produces and perpetuotos sach a state of things, and in partionlar the apathy of Parlia ment, are wonderful. It is difficult to measurə the wickedness of those who wilfully sat property on fire, it is equally difficult, to understand how society recanolles itself to the enormous waste caused in this way. It is stated from New York' that the Bro marshal of that city closely examines into the causes of all fires within his jurisdin. tion, and that far not dare to commit arson in view of his severe scrutiny. If webad a similar functionary in every city and town throughout the United Kingdom, it is quite certain that wo should have fewer fires, and would have to pay lower premiums for our insurance. At present we defrand oursel ree, we allow the waste of wool property, and by carelessness we invite serious crime in our midst. The question of fre oort nerships will soon be again tested in a prection), manner. In the ananing session the Corpars tion of the City of London will bring in a bl the object of which will be to confer on the city coroner power to hold inquests into the origin of all frs within the city boundaries. We urge the fire insurance companies to rally to the sap- port of a measure do pragrant. with good bath for themselves and the public generally,
