Considering the palibal and goographical connection between India and Tibet. It is strange how slight has been the relations ba- tween us and the Tibetane. In fact, since the days of Warren Hastings there has been hardly nay lo 1774 e peut an envoy-Mr. Beargo Bugle to the Teala Lam, and for na fetoresting and instructive account of that mis- sion we are indebted to Mr. Claudents Markham, who edited the journal of Bogle some twelve years ago. The result of the mission was slight idea... and transitory. Hastings, however, was not the ihan to be baffled in accomplishing any work which be bad determined to do, and a few years later be despatched anniher ambassador të zon gratulats a new Teshu on his accession to the diguity.
Captain Turner's mission, however,
did not prove more successful than Bugto's. In 1792. rar broke out between Nepaul and Tibet which resulted in the total defent of the former. Kautmandoo rould have been sacloed, but for the intervention of Lord Jornwallis. The inter Yodlicn even dear. Up to this time Indian goods found their way to Tibet, and Tibetan goods to Bengal, but the Chinese rented the mediation of Lord Cornwallis by closing the passes of the Himangrenting block kuuses at thoir nothorn entrances, and putting a stop to all intervoare whatsoever. Huc and Gabot; two Franch missionarins, who, after sigh- teen months of long warohes and terrible bar shipa, made their way from China to Lhasa tere, however, 2000 deported back again. In the Abbe Desgodins travelled through portions of Bestern Tibet and reached Chintado (in Kbat), but was prevented from approaching any closer! to Lhasa Let of all, the Russian Colonel Pre- javalsky succeeded in exploring portions of Nor. thorn Tibet, but was unable to penetrate wuth- wards into Bodland.
