Although the existing statistics give us little information as to the value of the trans-trontier trade as a whole, time is for both Upper and Lower Burmah, there are many indications of what it is and may booome. We have still the complete statistics for the trans-frontier treda of Lower Burtab, but by far the most valuable part of the trans-frontier trade is supposed to nome through Upper Burath, and we have no means at present of clearly distinguishing it from the tenda of that provinge itself. An at i topf has been made, however, to get at the trade of Bhamo by keeping a register derived from the maniforts of the vesaola vngaged in the conveying of merchandise between Mandalay and Bhamo. Some of this trade, no doubt, und probably a vary considerable portion of it, in merely a local trade between these two important Burmese towns. Bat a part also must be a go- nuine trans-frontier trade. Ofcours, as no trast worthy statistios were kept by the Burmese Go- ernment, it is quite impossible to ascertain how the past year compares with precoding years. THE INDIAN MAILS.
After all that lies béon arid about the enormous trade possible with Western China and passing through Bhame, it is rather a disappointment te and that the whole Palus of the trade between Mandelay and Bhario for the year 1336-87 is represented by a sam only slightly excoding thirty-seven lakhs of rapes. Of this 23 lakhs are "exporta", by which torm is evidently meest shipments from Mandalay to Bhamo; and about 14 lakhs are imports. inference is that the total of 37 Jakhe may be taken as a not onfair estimate of what the total trade between Mandelay and Bhamo, including the trade to Yuuuse, has been in the time of the Burmese kings. How much of this is local trade and how much genuine trans-frontier teste, wa ean only conjecture from the articles named, and the 37 lakhs is geouiue trans-iratier trade. By thing would lead one to infer that less than half for the largest item in the list is raw cotton, which was "exported" to the value of nearly 6 lakhs. This probably was for the most part rias.
