India had 250,000 seras under tea-cultivation, and produced 70.000.000lbs. of tos; the capital invested in the industry was £16,000,000 ; and a quarter of a million of Her Majesty's enbjects, who indirectly contributed to the inooban tax of Great Britain, were engaged in it. The recoat painful case of death from hydro-Chins Fire Insurance Company's Shares-288 phobia, says the Straits Times, sals attention in the regrettable foot that the public, generally, is not well informed as to the striking alference liet woon rabies and hydrophobia. The forinet, so medios experts say, is a malady peculiar to dogs, the other being a discuss to which only human beings are liable. The spread of one of them by an animal affected with the other

does not, as a matter of course, prove their

close relationship. Byraptons of hydrophobiskaro in fact been broughton by simply fear arising out of a bite by a dog supposed to be mad at the timo. As a matter of fact, it does not follow as, an inevitable seqnance that the bite of a rabid dog would give any one hydrophobia. Were i prasible to do away with the element of four, cases of this fearful diacaso arising after a bite would greatly lessen in number. An instance is known of a woman who, an heing bitten by s dog. and the wound canterised without say rasulting bad consequences. Years afterwards, as she was passing along a street, somebody call- ed out that she had been bitten by a mad dog and wondered at her being still alive. This and den reminder gave bar suara shock that she was immediately sized with all the symptoms of hy: drophobia. It is said, on good authority, that authenticated cases of rabies among dogs are not so many as some people fancy. In any case, care should be taken of te arnas smong the public a groundless or excessivə terror on the añora of isolated cases of hydrophobis from dogbite. Our correspondent Saladin, în advocating au exterminating crudo against pariah dogs on the ground of their liability to that dread disease, seems to forget that rabies was unknowu bera until two years ago, when it was introduced by European dogs. At least so it is currently re- ported. It may be lurking or dormant for all We know even among domostiested house dogs. Pariahıs, however, lo desarre to be cleaver swAY

on other grounds. The way in which they are at present, killed in inbuman enough to call for the attention of the society for the prevention oruelty to animale,

THE BOMBAY JEWS.

Mr. Justice Scott's eloquent address at the Bani-Irael Benevolent Boriaty Bombay, reminds us of a singularly interesting little community who, if he is right, have äred there for, the last! airteen bandred years. The story of the da voted little band of the children of Israel who, As Mr. Jostios Scott says, "1,600 years ago pre- ferred thu faith of Jehovah to all thlogs, and left home and friends and all their past behind them for the sake of their religion, in a grand story." They wore, be sontingès, shipwrooked off Bombay, only seven met and seven women surviving, and we cordially agree with him that their long struggle for existence through thedarkosntaries of Hindoo and Mahomeday rule,. the rotation among idolatrous millions of their grand faith in Johovah as the one and only God and their survival to the present day with their monotheistic faith itzot and a prosperity of some thousands of souls, is one of the remances of history which is not as well known to the world as it desertas to be." In narrating tho story of the saven men and seven women who were their founders, Mr. Scott was probably, however, only repeating their own legends, auð he probably accepted their own date for the time of their arrival in Western India. But it would be extremely interesting to follow up any clus
