quito of the sea, which was to swear the ironolad off the face of the can, is daily losing its repa. tation, and we should not be surprised if, after this dissater, the small boate should be conneû to sorvido on the coast end in landlocked waters.
Bigger ships may venture more, but little craft should bag the shore, The French Government have made au evaalve contradiction of the ropert, which confirms the belief that it is true.
It is not often, says a French correspondent, that a spectator at the theatre can sit in his stali and ses his two wires acting in the same play. Such, however, was the oss at Touloase the ather day, when M: Ismaël, the well-knoŴYTA singer, went travelling in the Sonth, to hear the opers of “Fauria and found bis first wife, from whom he had retently been divorced, playing the part of Marguerite, while the second wife, to whom he was married a few weeks ago, repre sautod Sisbal The local journals state that while the two ladies-Sisbal mors empecially were musk agitated at the novelty of the sifun. tion, M. Parksps one of the muidest rights in the world, As a contemporary remarks, is the ceremony of a lovely young girl taking the vel, and barying her- self alive in a convent. There lately died in Baili more a bun of the name of Agnes Gubert, who, according to Rubinstein's testimony, posacaand the richest and most wonderful voice over Imown within the memory of man. The operatio im- presario Strakosch offered herin bistline £10,000 for a six months' concert tont, which she, how- aver, refured, in order to take the veil and bury herself and the onormous fertans which was in her voice within the gloomy walls of a convent. It is even said that she was never allowed to sing i in the shoir, for she would grow vain and repent. what she had done. It is more than likely that this brutal restriction had the opposite effect, and that, deprived of the right to use the volcs which she had dedicated to her God, it broke her Leart.

A "pisno made of pretty girls" is the latest pemity from Pittsburg, and perhaps it will ba triod bere for obarity bazaars. It formed part of a strawberry and los cream festival, giver in the North Avenue M. E. Church, Allegheny, under the auspices of the Ladies' Ait Bocisty, for the benet of the Wood's Ran M. E. Charol. The "humaniphone," was kept a great secret from all who were not willing to place in the doorkeeper's hand the magic hit of silver which opened the door to the ante-room on the right. Üpon an- tering the room, the beads and shoulders of several young ladies were visible above a sorven extending the length of the room.. All the "young laåtea wore masks, and from their necks hang appended a card, on which was printed a musical note. It did not take the suddiảnna long| T 19 to discover that the "humaniphone" was simply a human piano. It was played by Miss Nalle Schoyor. With a wand she walked to and fro, and sach young lady uttered a different note as she touched her with a wand. In this novel macoor Miss Schoyer played Hous, sweet huns," "Yankoe Doodle," and x number of other melodies.

A good story is told of the Comte de Béarn, a well-known Parisian, who has just been gathered to his fathers. He we at one time an inveterate : card-player, and always carne home from ki slab in the early hours of the morning. The Coun tess complained and threatered all sorts of things unless he reformed. So the Gout had a layel- gure made, and ordered his vaet to plase it in Kia bod ovory night about eleven. His wife, who was in the babit of peeping into his bedroom to con if he were there, was thus taposed on for sens time. One night, however, having important news to communicate to him, she resolved to take hiz up, and thus discovered the trick. The Countess id nothing, but determined to turn the tabisa an ker husband. She accordingly placed the lay- Aguro naright behind the door. The Count, ro turning home as manal in the darkness of the night, knocked down the Lgure, and the next Wi- second the whole houss wie aroused by cries of Thieves! thieves! help! help!” Of course, when lights were brought, the Count stood abanked, and, asking his wife's pardan, swore he would turn over a new leaf. The story asya he kept his word.
