Sir C. Bernard has completed a tour through the districts between Mandalay and the Toung- -hoo frantiar-Convoya-et-trabəna-carta, carr· ing cotton, rios, and other goods, without arend escorts, were met with almost daily. Plonghia prepanations and agriculture were going everywhers. The rainy season has sit in fo rourably, and there are no longer ferrs of iamins. In the districts east of the Irrawaddy the dacoit ganga urs diminishing, and are wesker in numbers. Fro insurgent leaders are now treating for submission under the proclamation. In the distriota round Mandalay matters aro decidaily quieter. The railway reconnaissant have surveyed 70 miles from Tounghoo to Ning- yau, and are going toward Temethen. The hous ing of troops in defensible paste is wall forward. The troops so. generally "hoalthy. The tale grapt line is to be extended from Shwebo to You and from Taungana to Yemethen. A convoy of --bosts carrying lazalid soldiers was fired upon by dacoits on the Sittang Riror between Ning- yan and Teunghoo, but the docoite worn cosily drives off by the escort with a loss on par side of mas native bostman killed sad one private soldier wounded.

Mr Robert Phayre was shot at Padong, near Miubhoo on the 8th June. He was où circuit collecting revenue with 50 of the Panjab Pelion, and, being joined by 50 sepoys, he prosseded to attack the decoit leader, Bob Shway, st Padeng. The dacoits anzabarad 701 men, and they sur- rounded Mr. Phayre's party on three sides. Mr. Phayre thereupon took 30 men und dashed at a strong point of the anamy's entrenchments, but quickly fell, xhot through the breast and groin. The dacoits carried his body away. In tas Barmsk offais! Gzzette it is notified that she Chief Commissioner is Krived to bear of the death of Mr. Robert Phayre, Deputy Commissioner of Minhin, who was killed on the 8th June in an engagament with dasoits. "He bore a name much honoured in Burmah by men of all racas. His career in Lower Burmsh was marked by dress as well as great knowledge of, and regard for, the people among whom he worked. Is the large and difficult district of Minkla he did excellent service. In him the contry and Government lose an able and valued public servant.
