There are few persons probably who are not familiar with the bright flue vases and plates decorated with birds and biossoms which onllyon the windows of dealers in Oriental goods and artistic to morabants. The number possibly is mach greater of persons who seja unaware, or only imperfectly acuars, of the proosassa of which eloisonné ansels are the results, and which have for many generations, since the introdxo-
tion of the art from China, formed one of the principal artistis industries of Japan. Uninven tire themelves, the Japaned possess in singular degres the faculty of parfsoting the arts which they have acquired from other nations. Unwearying asaidaity, combined with oxicomo delicacy of toucb, rendor theta unrivalled as workman in the management and olaboration of detail. Their printinge, su perselain, araented with a miomsnoplo minatoners and accuracy, and the fine intricacy of their islaid and overlaid metal work are sufficient procts of their powers in this line. But if any doubt still existed it would be speedily dissipated by a visit to a workshop where clotsound in being made, and an inspection of the processes involved in its maanfacture. The greatest living maker of cloisosus in Japih, por hapa in the world also, is one Namikawa, who rosides in Kyoto, the old capital of the Mikados. A nobleman by birth, he saforad in the troublens times which accompanied the overthrow of the Shogun, and, like many of his compeers, bad ro courao to trade as a means of livelihood, withcut in any way losing paste. He has oatablished a reputation as the first cleiconné manufacturer of the day, and his wares fetch from the dealers whatever price he chooses to sit upon them. His courtesy to visitors is extremo, and bo revius for more anxiou to show them over his establish- mont than to sell them his goods.

In a clean, airy spartment, where the light comes in softly through the paper walls, the workers, men and women, can be seen at their tasks. On the surface of the object, generally copper, which is to be enamelled, the design is worked out with tiny metal fillots, liko at tered wines, of varying lengths and shapes These are fastened on with a strong glue, and for the cloisons, or partitions, which are to separate the differently coloured enamels. This part of tho work scoms of almost maddening nicety, and must require immenso calmness of nerves and steadiness of hand. The effect of the process is to grind down the inequa lition of the enamelled surfaos, until the design is left clear and indelible, outlinel by the cloisons, and with a fine vitesons lustre.
It is obvious that warea which require so much time and skill in their manufacture should com- mand a high price, and very high accordingly are the prices for good work. Taferior clotaonná can be bought cheap enough, but its purchase is not to be recommended; for, besides flaws in the workmanship which are apparant at once, the colouring of the enamels is apt to fado. Of course, in order to distinguish good work from bad, it is necessary, as in everything else, to be | something of a connoisseur; and especially dif ficalf is if to tall osloncing which will be durable from that which will prove transient. With re- gard in the blue colour which so often forms ihe background of cloisonné wares, it is important that this should be of the right shado; as thore are blues of many kinds besides the para tur quoise tint that is to be sought after. The amount of decoration, of course, is one of the consider. ations to be taken into account in determining the value of the articts; bat this must not be too exclusively relied upon, as it not unfrequently happens that a great deal of labour in expanded pou ornamentation which is intended to conceal
other defeats and
