COUNTY CRICKET..
THE KEST AVERAGES, The result of the Kost Basson mast ba looked on as highly satisfactory. Nine matches wore played, four ending in vistory, three ia defeat, and two left drawn. One of the drawn matabes was against Yorkshire at Contebars and was kit grastly in favour of the home county, who The table of results is given below, and from must have won had time permitted. The wins if it will be seen that Nottinghamshire cocapy ware Sussex twice, Korkshire once, and Mid-first placo, this being the third year in succession dlesex once. The defeats were suffered at the that they have gained the championship among kands of Lancashire, Surros, and Middlesex; and ; the panties. The record is not quite so good the drawn games were played with Surrey and as in 1834,, when the prozalar mounty passed Yorkihira,
Throughout the season the team worked wonderfully well together, and their success is the more remarkable, as Lord Harris was only ablo-to-appear in three of the rise matchos, great amount of crolit is due to Wootton, Alue Hearne, and Mr. Christopherson, who had to do a very large share of the bowling. The doings of these three men speak conclusively for the improvement of the bowling shown by cricketers in the South, Wootton heads the list with 55 wickets at an average of 16.16, and he deserves Try great credit. He has steadily worked his way to the front, and must now be classed among the best left handed bowlers of the day. The batting averages come out remarkably well, and there are only two men who have not reached double figures. Mr. Patterson has one of the highest county storages of the mason, and though his 481 is mainly due to tha 143 against Busser at the Brighton, he played exceedingly good orickot in most of the other contorts, and showed that he has retained nearly all his old excellence. The Rav. R. T. Thoratoa proved himself a valuable member of the team, and his remarkable improvement will be noticed when it ja stated that last year he averaged paly 11.4, while this season he has got up to 37.4 for nine completed innings. -
THE YORKSHIRE AVESAGES,
The record is an exceedingly good and, as out of sixteen matches they won seven, and lost only two, the other seven being left uninished. In three of those unfinished games, however, they would certainly keve been defeated. Yorkshire's position among the panties is second, as the Nottinghaud eats have only suffered ona defeat. Yorkshire's strength this season has been in batting, the average table showing a degree of erosilanes all through the Elovon that a few counties con aver have surpassed, F, Lise heads the list with an aggregate of 725 rangan avAN age of 34.11. For a player who only came into prominence last season this is a very fine result. Hill, who was at the top of the averages in 1383 and 1884, has fallen back into the fourth place, but bas nevertheless shown consistently good nricket. Bahar, Dyott, and Grimshaw, on the other haud, show a considerable advance upon their bathing in 1884. At a period of the sea- son. indoed, Bates's batting was superior to any thing he has over doua. The county depended almost entirely upon mon who had appeared in the team before, but a new playar of graat merit and still greater promise was brought forward. in Preston. This young professionat made his mark at once, and has already takea high rank; He is a very exaud batsman, a brilliant feld, and a good fast bowler. Yorkshire'a bowling was not up to the standard of former years.
Emmott Peate, and Peel were nil far more expansive than 1344, and Batca, though betook a good number of wickets, was severely punished Owing to the scoident which, for a great part of the so4. Bon, provanted Wyatt going on to bowl, Harri- son, the sensational Colt of 1883, was re-into- duced inlo the eleven. He took 33 wickets, but did not approach his former sucOESIDI.
THE MIDDLEDDE AVERAGES.
The great fosture of the Middlesex season was the remarkable victory over Yorkshire at Shaf- fold, and this performscoe stored for many dis. BIŠANĀ. The victory was gained by goot all and cricket, and Mr. Wobbe had every reason to feel proud of his succes. The only other
