ANTI-CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION
IN TONQUIN.
A lattor from Mgr. Pugiler, the Vicar Apostolio of Western Tanquin, in the Missions Catholiques, gives the painful nows that a sat: Christian outbreak is again ravaging the 'provinces of Sơn tây, Hue hot của museu quang. It is as follows:--
Hanoi, 19th April, 1885. The Western Tonquin raisaion, which has been so cruelly tried for three years past, is Tho now again is throus of fresh crinis. northern district, consisting of tho provinons of Jon-tly, Hung hor. Teyen-quug, contain: eix parishes with Christian population of 12,000) sanly. Five of these parishes are at this moment being ravagi by the Blog Flags and strong bands of rebels, who have made common cause with them. Bix priosty bars had to acok rofago at Son-tily to see carmin death. One of thom, parish priest of Hong- koa, was
Biz kile- reited on
April 7th
He was metres to tho sonth of it towa, also flosing from the Chinese-with more than 300 women and children of his parish, when he fell into the banda of a band which lay in wait for them on the banks of the Blank River. Tha women and children, however, were not harmad the briganda, sesing them in rags, Ist them go. and pantented themselves with tying up the ouré and his assistant, I know nothing of what they have done with this priest, save that they took him to a vilinge occupied by the Black Flags. I tried to have him ransomed, bat in spite of the arge sum we offered. we have, bem arabla to effect his release.
About thirty missione have been destroyed by the Chinese; one of those comprising a thousand had twenty people murdered about s hundred carried of as pristaois, the others
have suffered less. The Christians are flying. most of them to the mountains, and soure to the heathon villages in which they have acquaint- auces. A thousand women and children hare succeeded in reaching Hanoi and Soo-thy; the mission has to maintain then, for most of them scrived empty handed. Even afuent families have been unable to tako snything away with hom, for they would infallibly have been plundered on ta ad and perhaps murdered. Everything as left at the meray of the Invadera-houses, fivo stock, &c.--to secure life branrecipitate fight
This Bon-tar district has been auðh-trind-in- the last eighteen years. From 1867 to 1875 the bands of rebels, Yellow Flags and Black Flags, ravaged it at various times, and committed the most frightful atrocities. A parish of 3,500 Bouls had, in five years, 2,500 people misanored or killed by their privations. For three years. this same district has never ceased to be the pray of the severest misfortunes. If, at inter- vals, it has had & few morike' respite, it has dearly paid for the seamingquiet which porsanded the Christians to return to their homes. At divers times the Black Flora hare made a aud- den inroad, plundered and burned the houses, killed a large number of people, and curried na prisoners hundreds of wotaet and children.

situation of the Christians in the northern día triat is becoming moro and more orition. Pray God in his goodness for our mission!
War is enyahora disstrona, bat in Europe the evil is temporary and confeed: in Tanquin it is a scourge for the whole country and the whole work because it brings in its train brigaadago, raon, murders and wholesale mas macros. And yet, although the whole population euffers, it is the Christinna who are undoubtedly ́especially tried. The pagans god by coming to an understanding with the enemy, ally then selves with them, and berouns briguúids in their tara. Bat other neophytes have no other ro source than to fly, and have to encrifice all they possess to save their life. Besides, it is by no meana uncommon to seas small Christian ham- let, ensconced amid numborless Leather ones, plundered and burnt while the latter are un- touched. The Chinese sad the bands subsidiaed by the Mandaring are perfectly competent to make the distinction, and they are not ignorant that the Catholing are friends to Fennos. Ok, how painful is the present state of affairs for our neophytes and for a missionaries. Our life is passed in oares, alarms, and the most aente an- ieties. Not a week but brings some fresh mis- fortunes; not a day without bad news; now it is a mission persecuted, a whole parish devastated; often a whole district, composed of several parishes, ravaged by: Chinova banda--Catholic Register
