new that we este de more than bea boon our outou under similar circumstances, The Di plotatie Body has maintained the principle that the teaching of Christianity, and its se- ceptase, chall not be to the disadvantage of a Chin-so subjost, This has been confirmed by the Thrane. It eseme wise for as, Akerefore, to accept what the Throne given, as the expression of general Imperial polley, and when eates srics, such as you indicate, implying a violation of our rights, to make them a matter of special ramonstrance and reclamation,

Much has been written Intaly shout the Catholic and Protestant Missionaries receiving protation from the Ministers and Consals of the Powers in Trusty with China. Waate not aquated with the Protestant Mission and therefore wo abstain from speaking of them, limiting our roinucks only to Catholio Missions in Chins, of which we have a pretty good kaɔw-ON lodge, as nothing leads us so ecaily inte blanders, than importeat knowledge of what we we dealing abont We must know all particulare to be able to judge rightly of a fast. Many times there are facts independent from us but the existence of which we cannot deny and which must forcibly be acusidered pad acted apon. In order to know the true spirit with whiab the Catholic Missionaries Ears bosa actuated and in the same time alteration of their statos caused by independent facts, we shall givo. a short history of the Catholiu Missions with regard to it.

This stata of things, which we might onl! the policy adopted by the Catholic Missionaries in Chim, went on till the beginning of this ea tury, when a sarare persecation compelled the missication to leave Pching. In 1845 Monsieur De Lagrené concluded with the Chinese Govern tuent the first treaty assuring liberty of religion, but the treaty having been violated, the Fesnob in 18 joined the English in their oxpedition against Chias. Thas the position of the Cuthali Missions in China wag altogether alterol, the change was not made by the missionaries, it was made by the representatives of the Europona Powers, the misionaries found themselves under the

by the Treaties is grounded on the conviction 15 that China boing yet a semicivilized nation would not always respect the Treaties were it not compelled by a material force; and no doubt ia the first yours after the Treaties had been made the Ministers and Consuls could easily obtain whatever they asked. But later on they lost their power, so much so that pu the last few years they were sure that whatever they should ask it would be refanod. The expedition to Tonqnia was made even with the view of regain jag intense in China: but it happened quite the rover, the Chinese troops who never faced with ouserception only, an European army, sve been abl not only to check the advance-of-the Baropesa troops, but also to fight against them for two or three days continnally and sometimes never with success. In a few years more China will not fear any Baropean army.
