"I regret to announce the death at his episcopal AMPA G
residence in this city on the 19th January, from paralysis, of the Right Rav. Bishop Eligs Cosi, of the Order of Friars Minors. Vicar Apostolic of the Province of Shantung, over which part of Chins he had aroroised spiritual jurisdiction for a quarter of a century, having been previously a missionary priest for ten years. The deceased preiste had been in Europe in 1869-1870 to at- tend the Vatican Council held at Eome under Pope Pius IX. during those years, and also: in 1881, when he visited Paris for an operation for for ostarnut in big eyes. He retired to Chins in Docomer, 1983, having rogovered his night saficiently to perform the servions of his sacred office, but in shattered health. He travelled from Chefoo through the Western portion of Shantung to Chi-nna Fa during tho rigorous winter of 1883-84, administering thos sacrament of confirmation in the numerOTER villages and towns where Christians reisidel, 'a'd reached his residence shortly before Easter, 1864;. when, worn out with fatigas as was seized with an attack of paralysis, under which he lingered till his death. He expired surrounded by the Catholic clergy of the city, and after having ceived the consolations of the sacrament adent- nistered at the point of death. His memory will be long cherished amongst the Catholics of North-China, both for his religious real and piety, and for his scientido and learned accom- plishments. He was the inventor of a phonetio method of writing the Chinese language whida is extensively and in corrispondence betweńs Chinese Catholics in North-Chine, and for print- ing books of devotion and Soripture history and the translation of the sacred text of the Bible for. the use of the faithful. This phonetic-method- of capressing Chinose characters is now being applied to telegraphy; being mora zasy to use and involving loss time than the present moda of transmithing messages in Chinese does. May be rest in peace.-N. G. Herald Correspondent.
