THE PROPOSED IMPORTATION OF.. CHINESE LABOUR INTO ENGLAND,

The adjourned mogling of the Democratio Federation, to farther consider the question of the proposed inportation of Chinese Inbart and the desirability of sending a deputation' to Mr. Gladstone on the subject, was held on the 27th September at 103 Palaos Chambera, West minster. Mr. H. M. Hyndman occupied the absir, and, in opening the proceedings, read a letter from Frofperor J. H. Lovy, in whion the writer, apologising for his inability to be present, said that he had ten years ago onlled the alten tion of the working classes to the very great dangor which at no distant data would arise from the increzded facilities of immigration from the nonphs of the countries of the extreme East The exclusion of aliens with a very low standard of living from any country in which the standard of living is considerably higher was not only in Recordance with the principles, of political economy, but was a cound practical application of those principles le was a thorough fran trader, and to his rind any interfarne with the free exchange of commodities was a blunder and very often a orima. But he donied that labon was a comodity. There was no labour spart from labourers, and free-trade in labour was free- truda in lahanrera. The "free" importation of laboncur with a miserably low standard of som- fort meant this, that the small body of capitalists and landowners had the right to turn the great balk of the poople of these islands out of sus country and supply their placas by cheaper human machines. It meant that this country belaugail to the wealthy few, and that they might when they chose arict the British nation. He had ao dislike for the people of Chios. He pitied them from the bottom of his heart. But they hail a disease the most frightful, whick could afflict any community, and if we allowed them to come here they wonid communicate it; to us wittunt getting rid of it themselves.

A vote of thanks to the Democratic Federation. for the netion it had taken in the måtter, and to the cheirum for presiding, terminated the pro- seedings.—London and Chan Papirosa. *****
