Mr. Khaw Chang, the late Ukiot Go-instinet Wind vernor of Ronoung, was a native of Amoy. He loft his birta plon for Benooo-len in 1816, whan that Colony was under the English. He settled thers as a trader, but when the place was ebapged for Milken with the Datoh he was persuaded by the late Mr. W. T. Lewis, of the Bengal Civil Service and lato Resident Collier of Penang, to come here. On coming to Penang be entered into partnership with the Firm Chop Bian Hong," and tested with the Sismore ProviLoos on the Western Coast, principally with, bis Siamese Majesty's Pro vince of Pangbs, After some years Mr. Khaw Foo Choang asked tho Sismens Governusut to farm to mim tim province of Tevoung, then more strip of jungle, and little knowe. Through his indefatigable exertions and just dealings the, place soon become a thriving and tin producing province. Chinese locked to it from every part, and the Siamese Government was ao phased with the way in which he had prevended to open up the country thereabouts that H.M. the King ap pointed him a kind of deputy Govorner of that province, under the orders of the Governor of Chompors.
