There remains only the Hong-Kai, which offers through Tou quín a navigablo coure into the heart of the diatriots which it is desiral to tap. How far the opening-up of this river to European com meroe would divert the scarsos of Chiness trade and affect the commercial propority of Shanghai must for the present romain anosrtain. A very important trade in woollen and cotton fabrics fa dove through Shanghai with the western provinces of China, whence also larg quantities of tea and silk return to Shanghai. A more complete opening-up of those provinces as consequence of readier access, though it might disturb private interests at first, would eventu- ally be beneficial, and might hasten the complete breaking down of Chinese oxclusiveness. But the extent to which we and other commercial nations tay participate in those advantages wili perhaps depend upon the terms on which protectionist France will permit other fags and other goods than her own to ascend the Song-Koi-Pall Mall Caselle.
