The series of torpedo experiments nordnota under the direction of Captain” Arthur and the ators of the Vernon, at Portsmouth Harbour, on the 6th June, were witnessed by a numerous. and distinguished company, imong who were Admiral Sir George Eliot, E0B, Noval Comidander-in-Chief and Rear-Admiral Foley, Superintondout of Torlemouth Dockyatů. Tha first experiment exhibited the operation of an ulooffically steered pimace" constructed to drop countermines, the purpose of which is to destroy any torpedops of the cuerry, thus to clear way for the approach of reusita of war: The battery hurt or torpedo station, a wooden- ahod, from which most of these operations way lirootod, stands upon piles in the midst of the water. Suddenly from the side of this eraction the pretty little draft was soon to, rally forth, and as if by magio-fie there was no one aboard har-to miske her way to a distance of dvu og sit audred yards, whence, desocibing a carve, aho came swiftly back to her point of departure. It was in malting this carvo that she had steadily performed hur mission. Nothing had been shots to dotach itself from her during her passage, yet so bad siloudly dropped her phargų. Ka an instant un explosion was heard, and there arose in her wake a huge fountain, rising far aloft, and followed by a grant upheaval of water discoloured by med, suleiding in a far widening cirale of reddish foam. The countermines, which may be dropped one after the other by this means under the complete coulcol of the electrioni bat- tories, are furnished with slow fuses, which burn under water, and une gish capable, when fully charged, at exploding any torpedo of the enemy Iying within a radius of 150 yards. The next two operations wore a loss purely defensive shi- actor. The rat of the two may be regarded a the modern soientific equivalent of the ald rada -system of throwing Araballa inte the eciemy's quarters. Nothing, indeed, could be simplu. It is bit to cast ar sight-canco dist of gan-cotton attached to a gatta peroha line, by means of which, and a fuse, thus harml639-looking but forrible Hitle packet is capable of being instantly exploded This proves however, is necessarily attended with more danger to the party using it than ary mere ground torpele. Heuss Captain Arthur's offiears aud pupils, warned by 8, marrow. escape Turmeter plads B 700 730 from zu sochiyat at State Todort exportments it the same kind, were copeiderate enough to dis pense with the throwing and to show their visitors fas effect of this conficiranes by simply allowing it to drift away from this gangway of the Nottio, enclosed in cask. At little more than a hundred Wet Thermometer, yards this cask was blown into the air with * deafening report, the fragments of the hoops being phinly seen high up on the melt of a kind of water spout, which again ahaido leaving a turbid ring in the water, in evidence of the drop descent of the shock. Although no in. een ventener was felt by the bystanders beyond # apautary tingling of the ears, it was mifest that ane bost in which this mere diss of cotton Wogl had thus been exploded must have been in- ! stantly destroyed. The third experiment was even more interesting. This was the exploding of a charge of wet gan sotton ecclosed-a recos- sury condition of the explosivu-in a small pharge of dry cotton, which is preserved from damp by o coating of pitch. Any quality of sotion may be exploded with its maximum of force if it is simply- enveloped in this way, the first disobarge pira ceding, of everes, from the inner core. In this case the total charge consisted of 12x of oottoa. which was suffered to drift, er mther to he drown. sway in like mazmer, hit to a greater distance, looking as it travelled something like a small porpoise, sometimen fosting at the surface, some. times sabauerged, and at ao time very dis. tinguishable, "save by those who know where to look for it. The sudden explosion of this emali object, at a distance of ahont dU) yazıda, osudod o much larger body of water to rise into the air, assuming as i Yosen lightly dome-like shapo,
