A shipmaster writes to the London and China Express as follows-Will you permit me, through the medjuus of your paper, to direct attention to what scope to me an injustice to my composted with the mergautin marice? It was upon need in Hongkong in 1862 that a

THE RUINS OF PARIS.

Englishmen who go to Paris must be za tonished at the slowhees with which the rebuilding of the palace and houses burnt by the Commune is proceeded with. The Ministry of Finance bas abandoned its former site and remored to the Louvre, but the ground is formerly occupied still awaits a parolaser, and, with the exception-of-the corner of the Ruo de Bivoll and of the Rue Castiglione, offers the singular spectacle of waste hand in the busiest quarter of the town. The Tuileries are being robuilt as slowly that no perceptible change bas as ver taken place in the dreary ruins which fare too gardens. Private houses in the Rae de Lilla are being gradually finished, at Ionot outwardly, to the delight of the neighbourhood, who win last barulioved from the unsightly. safoldings which took up the greater part of the narrow pavementa; súd from which showers of plaster were ontinually descending opos the banks of passers-by. But the Hotel do Ville offers the most lamentable spectacle. Three years ago the rains had been anrrounded by a gigantió hoarding, high | was mupposed to hide effectually the work the musang from the gaze of the vulgar. In theam three years it wis thought, however, that some portion of the building would at last rige) above the surrounding planke, but this hope has) boce disappointed, und wo have ablast au ca- planation of this unbeard-of dilatarinosa, to the like of which Barn Haussmas had not accustomed the Parisians. It was intended at first to build the now, edifice upon the old foundations, which, however, were" not found sirong enough to beur eron a moderato weight. Wall uter wall, erected in the course of these tures yoare, have therefore been gradually palled down again, until overything belonging to the old Hôtel de Ville, even tite Salle Saint- Jear, which had been respected by the fire and the fornitions, have been entirely removed. Lets hope that the unsightly bourde and the stilteker scaffolding will soon disappear now hat the work has been taken up in earnest, and that there is no fator denger of having to pull dows ver and s non what had been finished The any Urfore Wiobe
